Great speaker

Overall, a great speaker. The 8" is worth the premium over the 6" model.
Pros: Wide frequency response. Punchy lows and sharp highs. Easy to setup. Very efficient. Ideal for medium sized setups. Front firing port is a plus. Particularly amazing for playing music loudly. Copper cones are beautiful and dramatic.
Cons: Cost. This is a $1,000/pair of left/right speakers. Big speaker boxes, check your room size and location. You MUST pair this with a good center channel, as these powerful babies will drown out speech.
I paired this with a 12" sub (same brand) and have no regrets.
This is not the top model from klipsch. It is about 90% the speaker at 40% the price.

This Klipsch Reference R-12SW subwoofer features a 12" spun-copper IMG (injection-molded graphite) woofer and built-in digital amplifier, so you can easily add robust bass to your existing audio setup.

Punchy, optimal for midsized rooms

Overall, great sub for the price. I have this on a 5.1 setup in a smallish room.
Pros: Punchy. Large enough for midsized setups. Easy to set up (just single subwoofer cable from the receiver.) Good power and frequency response. The middle gain setting is plenty of "thunder" for most action movies without being too obtrusive. The copper spun woofer is distinctive and looks great.
Cons: Fairly large, heavy box. Measure your location first. Not the top of the line klipsch, but adequate for 99% of us. Huge theaters will need the 15's, or consider a 7.2 setup.
I would absolutely recommend it.

Would a Yamaha model AS500BL integrated amplifier with 85W/channel at 8 ohms be a suitable amp for Klipsch R28F speakers?

It would work fine, especially for low/mid volume. More power would be safer for the speaker.

Most speakers are blown at high volumes, with low receiver power. I have 8ohm 100w/channel and I feel a little underpowered.

What's the best 'sub' to go with this set? I want very good low bass.

And also I've always had floor tower speakers, 3 way with 10 or 12 inch woofers, can a 'sub' box and smaller speakers (8" in this case) really compete with a set of larger woofers in the tower?
With an independent sub, yes, it can most certainly compete. I paired this with a klipsch r12sw and it plays beautifully. Love the "punch".

For more boom, consider a 15' offering from klipsch for matching timbre. Beware the huge speakerbox.

Does This speaker have an aux port?

What is the easiest way to connect phone? Can I with an aux cord?
No.

This is just a speaker. It connects to a receiver through speaker wire.
You'll connect your device to the receiver.
