Some funny songs here...

One of my roommates had this CD in college and I just had to pick it up for the nostalgia.
There's a running theme across the album of trucker songs, Convoy among the most famous/popular. So if you've found yourself watching and re-watching the Smokey & the Bandit movies, you might want to give this collection a listen.
There're some old country tear-jerkers as well if that's your thing.

I was really in the mood for Fire & Rain, my favorite James Taylor song, and grabbed this CD on impulse. I was not disappointed.

Excellent Spider-Man flick!

Saw this film on opening day at the theater and was NOT disappointed. This carries on this version of Spider-Man's story from right after "Captain America 3: Civil War" and is a great look at a high school kid trying to put the "man" in Spider-Man. There's a great cast all around. I can't wait to see this Spider-Man show up again in the extensive Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kong and Godzilla are back!

I've been a huge, titanic monster movie fan since dad corrupted me with them in my youth and they ran in Sunday marathons and after-school, afternoon movies.
I was thrilled when Godzilla came back in a big, blockbuster way in 2014 and I was equally excited for Kong: Skull Island when I first saw those trailers. I already had plans to go see Kong the next day, when I stumbled across an article discussing how Kong: Skull Island was in the same cinematic universe as the Godzilla 2014 movie I'd enjoyed so much.
That really made Kong all the better for me. If you have seen Godzilla 2014, then you should catch a few Easter Eggs when you watch Kong: Skull Island, which is a bit of a prequel to that Godzilla. (Godzilla was modern day, Kong is set around the Vietnam War era.)
WATCH the after credits clips! They hint at some of the other great movie monsters that might just make it to this cinematic universe in the future. I won't spoil them for you.
Oh, and for those of you who are also fans of the Marvel Movie Universe...it was just cool seeing Nick Fury and Loki in a movie together again.
=)

Loved this movie!

First let me say that I've loved all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to some degree or another, but the Guardians of the Galaxy movie(s) were a sleeper hit with me and my family. I wasn't overly familiar with the characters and the line-up wasn't "my" Guardians of the Galaxy so I wasn't expecting to love it. But love it I did. All the characters are great, though Starlord, Groot, and Rocket steal the show for me.
In the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is a lot more of the same that I enjoyed in GotG 1:
-One of the best soundtracks in a movie I've heard in a while...listen to them both all the time.
-Lots of great 80's nostalgia playing to my childhood...just as much in the new movie.
-Great humor, wrapped in great character development, and loner/family/team drama.
And for the sequel, I could call attention to so many things I love about the movie, but I'll leave it at having one of the greatest opening credits sequences that I can remember. I loved Starlord's dance through the ruins in the first GotG, but Baby Groot's dancing around to ELO's Mr. Blue Sky was better...especially with everything happening in the background.
Oh...and the end credits were engaging throughout. Not something you see very often.

Important qualifier - I have never seen an episode of the Dark Shadows TV series. This is my one and only exposure to the Dark Shadows world and I'm sure it is little-to-nothing like the source material.
This is your typical Burton-Depp-Bonham Carter collaboration. Dark, darkly-funny, and darkly-weird. Though this collaboration also gets the amazing benefit of Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green's on-screen presence.
I thought it was loads of fun for pure escapist viewing.
If you are looking for something that pays direct tribute to the series, it's my understanding that you will be disappointed.

As good as the Original Trilogy!

How high praise can I give Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?
How about that as a HUGE fan of the Original Trilogy of Star Wars films (Episodes IV - VI)...I now consider it to be the Original Quartet of films...Rogue One, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.
I found the story of Rogue One to be a great and seamless plot that only built up Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and made those events even more significant, knowing the cost of obtaining those Death Star plans and how tenuous a position the fledgling Alliance was truly in.
If I had any complaints about the film it would be that one character in particular had too much CGI treatment for my taste. I think the CGI work was well done and I like how the character was used to further tie Rogue One and A New Hope together. I'm just not sure if recreating deceased, great actors via CGI is true, honored tribute...or an unintended announcement that we don't need those actors anymore. This is something I wrestle with personally. I do not believe that Rogue One or its creators think the latter.
But on to the great...
Just like in most of the Star Wars films there is humor, but thankfully to this viewer, it was less slapstick than we've seen in the recent additions of films and more witty dialogue. K-2SO steals the show in this regard, though there are plenty of gems to be found from the other characters.
The special effects, music, and beautiful landscapes are just as we've come to expect from a Star Wars film.
I found the acting to be of a quality higher than we saw in the prequels with deep lead characters growing with the events of the story. And the "Seven Samurai" or "Magnificent Seven" collection of heroes is a fun and engaging cast.
Oh...and the "Easter Eggs" sprinkled throughout the movie...ties to other films...appear endless. Every time I watch Rogue One I see something I missed before.
I really can't say enough good things about Rogue One. If you are a fan of the Original Trilogy of Star Wars films, you DEFINITELY need to add Rogue One to your collection!
Enjoy!

That Thing You Do is probably one of my favorite Tom Hanks movies and I've watched it countless times.
It's just a nice feel good movie with some great music and a nice throwback to the 60's.
If you want to play a fun little game while watching the movie? Try to name all of the connections between actors/actresses and Tom Hanks. The man did NOT forget his friends and family when casting.

Great Bonus Material

There shouldn't be much that needs to be said about the 1938 Errol Flynn Robin Hood on a critical level. If you haven't seen it, you need to. Done.
This particular BluRay release of the film has a great bonus though. Night at the Movies 1938 has a brief intro by Leonard Maltin (?) talking about what an event going to a movie was back then, followed by a trailer for "Angels with Dirty Faces" (Cagney), a newsreel, an orchestral/swing performance, a Merry Melodies cartoon, and then flows right on into Robin Hood. It's just as if you'd been at the movie house in 1938. I highly recommend it! (I think it is my copy of Maltese Falcon that has a similar bonus.)

Good taste of Trek
on February 13, 2017

Confession - I'm probably one of the reasons Enterprise was cancelled.
I saw the premiere episode on its original air date, but for some reason I didn't watch any of the other episodes while the show was running. I have no idea why. I really enjoyed the pilot.
Fast forward to 12 years after the show has been canceled, I have some Best Buy gift cards, and I see that Enterprise is released in its entirety on BluRay. It must have just been the right time for me, but I grabbed it...and I LOVE it!
I really enjoy the cast as well as the stories. After years of watching Next Generation, DS9, and Voyager, all of which I loved, it was nice to pull away from the intermingled events of the 24th century to a time that hadn't really been explored yet...the beginning of Starfleet and the founding of a Federation. It was also a lot of fun seeing some of the "new" Star Trek canon equipment that wasn't embraced yet...like the transporters.
A lot of the stories help to frame aspects of Trek that are taken for granted...like the wisdom of establishing a Prime Directive. Oh, and seeing the burgeoning alliance with the Andorians (as represented to great effect with Commander Shan) as well as a somewhat more adversarial Vulcan/human relationship was well done and really helped to show just how far humanity had gone even as early as The Original Series.
While Captain Kirk will always be "my" Trek Captain and the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 will always be "my" Trek Enterprise and crew...Captain Archer, his crew, and the Enterprise NX-01 was a LOT of fun to watch and has earned its place in Trek canon.
