A little sappy but still as good as when it came out. I had to have this in my collection. The extras with Brian DePalma was fascinating, that alone is worth buying this dvd.

Second film and I loved it. The added character, surfer, was quite fun, never knowing how he would react until the end... and the gang of four fun as usual.

This double feature for fans of spooky, gothic movies with actor Johnny Depp offers two classics, Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Sleepy Hollow was worth buying again to see what Sweeny Todd was about. Did not expect a Sondheim musical and to really understand what they were saying I had to turn of the subtitles. Interesting but I don't think Sweeny Todd will be played again. Also I agree with Tim Burton... I hate musicals. But Sleepy Hollow is on my favorite list. Worth getting just for the novelty of it.

One of the funniest films of all time, Blazing Saddles, is awarded an excellent 30th anniversary DVD release by Warner Bros., a company that has often shown great care to the important titles in its vault. The film itself is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio. The English soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, which makes it seem like one is hearing the infamous farting scene for the very first time. There is a healthy amount of quality extra materials, including a commentary by director Mel Brooks. Although it seems as if he was simply recorded while talking about the film (he never once refers to what is happening onscreen, and the commentary ends only an hour into the film), he recollections are amusing and enlightening. He discusses in detail how the various behind-the-scenes people as well as the cast came together. The other five-star nugget included on this disc is the pilot for the television spin-off Black Bart. Starring Louis Gossett Jr., the show is as amazingly unfunny as the movie is uproarious, but one may be struck by the crudity of the comedy that would have been telecast in the mid-'70s. A making-of documentary and a section from a special on the late great Madeline Kahn help make this DVD a must-own for comedy enthusiasts.

The X-Men DVD provides an impressive 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and THX sound, but the supplementary material feels rushed. While the viewer has the option of watching ten minutes of extra footage reinserted into the film through "extended branching," the transition is not seamless; most of the scenes are from an unfinished working print and are not anamorphic like the rest of the film. The featurette "Mutant Watch" is a television "making of" special that is at least creative in its execution, if not very substantial. Segments from a Charlie Rose interview with director Bryan Singer are also included, but it would have been nice to see the interview in its entirety, while the Hugh Jackman screen test is a feature better placed in the context of a more expansive documentary about the production. The art and animatics galleries feature remarkable concept designs and computer animated storyboards, as well as two hidden "Easter eggs." Highlighting the rose in the trailer menu shows a brief on-set gag involving Spiderman, while Wolverine's dog tags in the art gallery provide concept art for two characters cut from the film. While X-Men has the appearance of a special edition DVD, it will certainly be supplanted by a more authoritative version in the future.

The Outlaw Josey Wales originally appeared on DVD in 1999, in a stripped-down edition from a film-to-video transfer dating from the mid-'90s, without any special features to speak of. In 2001, a new edition appeared without much fanfare as part of Warner Home Video's "Clint Eastwood Collection." The newer release is definitive, built on a sharper, brighter, and more detailed transfer (in the movie's widescreen 2.35-to-1 aspect ratio) of the movie, with much truer color; the older disc had a widescreen transfer with some problems in color tone and fuzziness in the finer details, which are all solved here. The advantages will be immediately apparent to anyone with a monitor bigger than 20 inches, and the bigger the better. Additionally, the disc includes a wealth of information and support materials that will please fans of Eastwood and this picture. The most basic component is the onscreen printed text explaining how the original story -- of which 75 copies had been printed, through a small publisher -- made its way unsolicited to Eastwood, and ultimately into production; and some aspects of the casting are covered, though one wishes that there had been more attention paid to the non-Native American players, fascinating though the latter are onscreen. The visual supplements, in addition to a new introductory monologue by Eastwood talking about the movie, also include the seven-minute featurette "Eastwood in Action," a 1976 promotional film; and "Hell Hath No Fury: The Making of The Outlaw Josey Wales," a much more ambitious 30-minute documentary from 1999, telling of the movie's history and production. It's a little too self-congratulatory in tone at times, but it also answers a lot of questions (as well as repeating some material) from the text panels, and it's great to see the surviving cast members talk appreciatively of their work and that of departed performers such as Chief Dan George; and Eastwood has some fun at the end of the short. The DVD goes to the simple, straightforward menu automatically on start-up, and the menus go to two easy-to-access layers of selection, including the language choices (English, French) and subtitles, and the special features. The 135-minute movie has been broken into 35 well-positioned chapters. The under-twenty-dollars price is also very attractive, especially given the extras that have been added.
