Brush Rollers Need a Better Design
on November 14, 2010

I love the idea of the Roomba. We've even named our Roomba R2, after R2D2. I love the fact that while I'm doing anything else, the Roomba is cruising around, doing a job that no one else wants to do. The part I don't like, is the ten minutes I have to spend trying to cut pet hair out of the brush roller. There has got to be a better design for these rollers. It's not so difficult to get the hair out of the brushes themselves, but the plastic groove at the end of the rollers really get wound up with pet hair. After each use, I find it quite irritating to be spending time with scissors, trying to get hair out of that little peice of plastic, when it should be a simple matter of emptying the bin, and cleaning the brushes.
Cons: Brushes hard to clean

Obtaining RED Cleaning Head replacement
on February 21, 2012

I was able to order the RED cleaning head replacement yellow caps that are on the ends of the RED brush unit by calling customer care and prompting the [@] prompt (prompt #3). This is a good way to get Roomba 500 parts and not have to purchase the GREEN replacement heads. The agent was very helpful and courteous - and in the USA!!! Hope this helps.
Cons: Needed Customer Service Help

Mom's time saver

I alone operate my Roomba and clean it. 6 years old. I used it on all types of floors in New York. It does a good job under beds, dressers and tables, etc. No bending for me. While taking care of my Mom I had more time for her because my floors were always taken care of by my Roomba. She loved our Maid. My Roomba now cleans my tile floors. Roomba came with me to Florida
Pros: Does what it should, Easy To Install, Easy To Use, Extends Functionality, Good endings, Inconspicuous Design, Increases Performance, Returns home when done, Works well alone
I would recommend this to a friend!

Brushes need improvement

I have been a Roomba user for 7 years, and have recommended it to everyone I know. The replacement brushes, however, are substandard. Others have mentioned that the 2 brush rollers don't provide enough contact with the floor to brush dirt up--pet hair lingers. But the biggest problem I have had is the 3-armed edger brush that comes with this set. It is MUCH too flimsy to operate! it becomes tangled and twisted under the unit and stops the Roomba's tires from turning. [...]

New brushes

I LOVE my Roomba. I have had it for over 3 years. I bought the new brushes and am not happy. They are not the red ones but they said they were interchangeable. Well, the green ones do not work in my 560. They are too soft and don't pick up at all like the red ones. I wish I could get the red ones again.
Pros: Easy To Install, Easy To Use
Cons: Doesn't Fit All Models

Brush Design Needs Imrovement
on December 8, 2010

I love my Roomba - however, couldn't agree more that the brush design needs improvement. I have cats and spend more time removing hair from the brushes. It gets cought under the bearings and around the space at the end of the beater brush, then I must spend several minutes with scissors and tweezers to get the fur out. There has got to be a better design.

Brush Design Really, Really needs work
on May 15, 2012

Long story short, I love the Roomba and have owned several. First the cheapest models and I was always replacing the batteries. Now the 500 series with scheduling which appears to have a more robust battery but the brushes are terrible. With the pet hair, I have to clean the brushes after pretty much every run by the Roomba which is ridiculous since the Roomba is supposed to save me time. Then within a few months I have to replace the brushes because the yellow rings warp and bind as described in another review. I have 2 engineering degrees (Mech and Elec Eng) and I don't think the warping and binding are caused exclusively by hair. If these brushes were my design I would not be proud of it. The brushes clearly overheat as the yellow rings show wear marks and grooves that have been cut into them. Once this happens the only way to get the Roomba to work without new brushes is to remove the material which came out of the grooves and cooled in raised lips just outside the grooves. I've found that you can (a) sand the yellow ring or (b) pick the material off with a fingernail or knife and lightly oil the ring and housing where the yellow ring rubs. I would not suggest the oiling in general as it attracts a lot of dirt. This is unfortunate as a little oil might well prevent (or minimize) the overheating and grooving that is occuring. Additionally, since this is a known (if not admitted to) design flaw I'd really like to see iRobot offer just the yellow ring at a bargain price. My brushes are fine I just have grooves in my yellow rings. Over the past 18 months or so that I've owned this Roomba the yellow rings are always the first failure mechanism of the brushes and the Roomba. Ridiculous - make the rings harder, or some cheap metal, or better yet eliminate them. There are other websites that offer a redesigned brush without the yellow ring but it involves buying about half of your Roomba again so you can replace the brushes, the brush guard, and the brush/housing interface. iRobot seems to be sooo very close to getting the Roomba series robots right that it is disappointing when something this obvious is the fatal flaw. Those yellow rings are clearly a flawed design choice. Someone wanted to save a few bucks instead of designing them correctly.
