"Long Term" Review - Multi-year review of S354UFER

I purchased the first of the two of these products (S354UFER) that we have, a number of years ago now - long enough that 2TB HDDs were pretty much the only affordable option for populating it. The utilization of this array is primarily ISO disk images which are then mounted for use, but there are also a number of video files in varying format (Mpeg2 through Mpeg4) . The file size averages 4 GB for videos and 30 GB for ISOs The array(s) are almost always 65-85% full, and have been running almost non-stop since installation. This past weekend I had my first HDD failure, the RAID 5 worked flawlessly - I inserted my 'cold spare' disk (which actually was 'on the shelf') the system rebuilt within 10-12 hours all the while still be accessed via the host. (Host is a Win7 Pro workstation with two of these arrays attached via eSATA for a total usable size of [RAID 5] 15 TB and a third similar product as 'JOB' Temporary workspace of an additional 10 TB.) As workstation attached storage, I have found these to be very hard working arrays, and after this last weekend (this first HDD failure occurred on a Friday night or Saturday morning) I would not hesitate to buy another.

I bought 3 of these a very long time ago, all still working great.
2 with 4 - 1TB drives RAID5 and 1 with 4 - 750GB drives RAID5.
Getting ready to update the smaller unit with 4 - 2TB drives RAID5.
Connect them to HP Z400 Workstation using eSATA.
Highly value them!

2020 and still running great!

Running this enclosure in RAID-10 mode, I am using 4 2TB Barracuda HDDs. Paired: Disk 1 and , 2 and 4. 2 logical disks configured using the enclosure, 1 partition is NTFS and 1 partition is Journaled (MacOS).
I use it to backup pictures, store video recordings and software installs.
My preferred cable is eSATA in conjunction with a eSATA to USB 3.0 cable adapter, this provides super fast reading/writing speeds.
StarTech has proven to be an amazing and reliable end-user solution!
