Great refrigerator

This unit is part of Whirlpool's "Gold" line of kitchen appliances. We have now owned this refrigerator for close to two years. The most notable feature about this refrigerator is the bottom-mounted freezer. This puts the refrigerator door on top, which makes sense, since we (and, I think, most all of us) go into the fridge more often than the freezer. The freezer section is a pull-out drawer with an upper and lower basket. The lower basket is attached to the freezer drawer front, while the top basket stays inside the freezer until you pull it out. The freezer comes with an icemaker unit inside.(Don't confuse this model with cheaper versions that feature a bottom-mounted freezer DOOR, rather than a pull-out DRAWER! The pull-out DRAWER model is more expensive - but also worth the extra price!)The freezer has plenty of space to store items. The two baskets make it easy to find what you're looking for at a glance. (A good practice to follow with this style freezer is to stack items on their side or end, rather than flat, so that you don't bury items at the bottom of the basket.) The drawer pulls out solidly and feels like a commercial-grade product. The upper basket pulls out nicely on wheeled glides and holds the ice bin. The freezer is well-lit with a light inside the compartment. The refrigerator manual says to expect a wait of 24 hours for ice production to begin, and 72 hours for production to be at full capacity, and we found this to be true. The refrigerator section is well-lit with two bulbs. It comes with four adjustable glass shelves (one which has an attached deli drawer) and a two-drawer humidity-controlled crisper at the bottom. The shelves slide out, making it easy to see or reach items in the rear of the fridge. Another plus is that the glass surface is recessed from the shelf frame, allowing it to hold any drips or spills from draining to the lower shelves or bottom of the fridge. The fridge also comes with four adjustable in-door shelves, and one mounted at the bottom of the fridge door that will hold gallon-size containers. The refrigerator runs very quietly. I read some reviews on another Whirlpool bottom-mount at Lowe's, the one with the freezer DOOR, that said it was loud or noisy. This unit is whisper-quiet!Door seals are tight and seal firmly. (The reviews on this site regarding poor door seals on the bottom-DOOR model definitely don't apply to this model!) Be aware, that upon first opening the fridge door and closing it, another IMMEDIATE opening of the door takes more effort (for example, replacing that gallon of milk that you just poured a glass of) - I attribute this to how tight the door seals. In a minute or so, the pressure will equalize and opening the door won't take any extra effort. This unit is Energy-Star certified, and is rated to be the lowest operating cost in its class.Overall, we love this refrigerator! The bottom-mounted freezer with its two baskets and lighted compartment is truly convenient (no more stooping over to see what expired food is in the rear of the bottom of the fridge!) and feels solidly-built. The top-mounted refrigerator is even more convenient since we're in the fridge more than the freezer. The unit runs quietly, and the most noise it makes is when an ice cube falls into the bin (which for me, doesn't bother at all since I'm glad to have an ice maker!). I'm glad my girlfriend talked me out of the freezer-DOOR model, and into this freezer-DRAWER model instead!

Nice 'Fridge

Very good internal layout, with great door seal. Great to use the door for bigger items, like milk gallons. Shelves easily adjusted. Crisper drawers are very useful, and it is nice to be able to control moisture level. Pull out freezer drawer is very convenient, especially with the sliding drawer inside and the built-in icemaker. The only draw back we have noticed is that it is louder when operating than our old one. We have only had ours for a few months, so we cannot speak to dependability. However, despite the louder noise, we are delighted with it.

Product meets all my needs

I had a Maytag fridge bought 20 years ago. When it stopped working I selected the Whirlpool because of its connection to Maytag. Had a glitch at first that had to do with temperature control.. They were very fast to come out, twice, and check the appliance. I live in the mts. 9000 ft. and once instructed that altitude can affect the temperature, I stopped worrying and it is great. I would recommend this appliance. It fits a very limited space yet provides all I need in refrigeration. It is very quiet too.LRH

Exceeding Expectations

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased the Whirlpool Gold bottom mount refrigerator and I couldn't be more pleased with the appliance so far. The adjustable tempered glass shelves are wonderful for customizing your food storage needs. I love having the freezer on the bottom, when you open the refrigerator door there is no leaning over to see what is in the refrigerator.

Best in class

By best in class I mean for this size (18.5 cu. ft.), which is the smaller end of full-sized refrigerators. It has a high-end look and is real stainless steel (magnets stick to it), unlike the one it replaced which looked like stainless steel, but must have been some kind of fiberglass.I don't hear any of the noises that other people have mentioned except perhaps when new ice drops into the receptacle, but how often does that happen in a day?The refrigerator compartment is average in terms of capacity and has gallon-sized shelves, which is a huge plus. Oddly, there is no tray for eggs, so the crate has to be placed on one of the glass shelves. I can't remember a refrigerator I've ever had that didn't have a place for eggs on the door, but oh well. The freezer compartment is probably a little smaller than models in the same class that feature the freezer on top of the refrigerator. This is because in order to make the freezer more functional, pullout trays were installed. This reduces the space somewhat, but saves you from having to crouch down in front of the freezer to reach something in the back. I don't use my freezer for much more than ice and vodka, so it's no biggie for me but if you're a freezer power user this may affect you.I can??t tell you how happy I am to finally own a bottom freezer refrigerator; or more importantly, a top refrigerator refrigerator. If you??re 6?? tall or taller, it??s a real back saver.

I like the features but can't stand the noise and worry about the frequency at which it keeps coming on. My previous 10 year old model was better in that regard.

Good refrigerator

Pretty much love everything about this refrigerator, but regarding the bottom freezer, would have preferred a solid box, rather than the basket design. The basket design is terribly dated. Solid box bottom freezers add much more efficiency due to less cold loss during opening. Can't really see how having a plastic basket is any more expensive to manufacture than a basket.
