Fedeal Govt Retiree Tax Return

Subject: Form CSA 1099R for Civil Service Retirees in TurboTax.
It was a nightmare working through the taxable portion of my civil service annuity. I finally figured out a way to do it.
In TurboTax (TT), leave Box 2A taxable amount field blank and continue. TT will use information from previous year’s return to calculate the taxable amount of the annuity for the year using a background worksheet. Incidentally, I could not find the Form 1099R replica in TT.
What's great about it: Overall it was a great timesaver.
What's not so great: TT had a difficult time on taxable protion of my civil service annuity
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Long Time User of TTax
on April 9, 2015

I have used TTax since the DOS versions (15+ years?) and find that it handles all of my tax issues including brokerage transactions, retirement income, rental property, etc.
However, it seems that for some years, while TTax will allocate rental property income and expenses according to my percentage of ownership, it does not allocate depreciation in a similar way. It appears to give me 100% of depreciation regardless of the % of ownership. Forum comments have confirmed this. Messy.
What's great about it: Clear guidance on some fairly complex issues like sale of rental property, 100-B transactions, etc.
What's not so great: Inconsistent allocation of rental property depreciation.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I have used Turbo Tax for over 10 years and have had a problem with it. It so easy, because it walks you through and ask all the questions needed.
What's great about it: Makes filing so easy and I feel as if it's all correct
What's not so great: Non

I would recommend using TurboTax to all my friends. I've been using it for 10 years now and would not use another product or tax firm.
What's great about it: easy to follow; much quicker charity input; covered all my bases; had easy to understand explanations
What's not so great: not really an issue with me this year but in past years entering tax basis for a DRIP stock sale was a little confusing
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

Problems printing
on April 9, 2015
Posted by: Bobglow1
Tried to print before and after e-filing. Could not do. When I selected print preview, I got a box asking which forms I wanted to print. Selected what I wanted to print. Box didn't close, didn't print and when I closed the box manually, and selected print it went back and started the whole process all over. What am I doing wrong?
What's great about it: Fast, easy to understqnd
What's not so great: Printing problems

I THOUGHT PREPRATION WOULD KILL ME - IT DID NOT
on April 9, 2015

I really didn't think I could do this in one day!!! It took about 6 hours because I never did a return with investment sales before and the print on some forms I received was really hard to read. Felt intimidated till started TurboTax Premier. Will file next year using Turbo Tax, too..
What's great about it: VERY LOGICAL AND SEQUENTIAL
What's not so great: A FEW WORDS NOT DEFINED - HAD TO GOOGLE THEM
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Confused about Rental Property and Royalties
on April 9, 2015
Posted by: klm503
Love the product. Tip: If you have 1 property that you are receiving both rental income for and you are getting a gas or mineral royalty for, you have to change the address so it appears to be 2 separate addresses! For example: 123 Somewhere Dr (to report your rental income) and 123 Somewhere Else (to report your royalty income). Silly but true and very confusing if you don't understand it in the beginning!
What's great about it: I love how it walks me through each step!
What's not so great: Really confusing when you have a rental property that earns both rental income and gas royalties!

Not my favorite job, but it works.

I believe that you need to engage more folks like me to work with user friendliness in all areas and parts and not just leave "improvements" up to the programmers & tax people. Not everything is intuitive. When we can't get something to work or compute correctly, it is most frustrating. However, when I had to call a customer service rep, they were great and stayed with me until we got the issue resolved.
What's great about it: It's good to be able to get into the various forms.
What's not so great: Perceived errors are not asking complete enough questions to make changes/corrections.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
