Easy & Painless
on April 8, 2015

I have been using Turbo Tax for more years than I can remember & this year was no exception, I found it to be simple & accurate in walking me through our tax preporations.
What's great about it: Walked me through everything & made the process easy.
What's not so great: Hit a snag when entering 1099-R forms for cashing in Roth IRA's but found the answeres to my questions in the forums
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Hard Year

I have used Turbo Tax for the last 7 years and never had the problems experienced this year.
I purchased Turbo Tax Deluxe 2014. In the process of preparing I found out that you were unable to report sales of securities as in prior years. However I was able to update to Premium on line.
Most annoying however, that after loading the program on my MAC and and moving it to my toolbar it would not stay there when I would log out. Never had that problem in the past. I would have 3 or 4 Returns come up every time would log in.
What's great about it: Much easier than by hand

Not as good as in past years

I have been a devoted user since 1994. First, I purchased the Deluxe version and discovered that I could not use the forms that I had available in the past years(schedule B). So, I took back the Deluxe version and purchased the Premier version which of course cost more.
I started using Premier and it seemed to go fine on the Federal, but when I got to the State of Ohio, I got different results than the program in the worksheet for line 46a line 2. It took only the amount for my Medicare premium payments and not the sum of out of pocket expenses plus the Medicare premium payments. I did the calculations long hand to be sure.
Very disappointing! If I had not compared with last year, I would have missed this.
This will probably be my last year with TurboTax, after all those years!
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Good Product

I have used Turbotax for many years and plan to continue its use. Downloading forms from financial institutions saves a lot of typing time for complex situations involving brokerage accounts. At the same time it was difficult to see exactly what was downloaded from an institution for which I have multiple accounts each with different tax forms. It became even more difficult when the financial institution issued "corrected" forms. I didn't know when I downloaded a second time if the new forms would replace (or add to) the forms already downloaded. Review of what is downloaded is inadequate.
What's great about it: Good User Interface -- easy to use, covered all my situations, easy to file
What's not so great: Difficult to view forms Turbotax downloaded from Internet
Pros: I bought or sold investments

2014 Federal Taxes
on April 8, 2015

I did not use Turbo Tax last year because of some complicated stock dividends so this year I was not able to transfer a .pdf file of 2013 Tax return from the accountant to Turbo Tax. It would have made my 2014 return much easier if I could have done that.
What's great about it: I have used Turbo Tax for many years and I really like it.
What's not so great: Could not transfer last years taxes prepared by a CPA.

OK but costs becoming higher and unable to transfer on-line data to downloaded CD version so had to redo entire document.
What's great about it: still fairly easy to use
What's not so great: had to move to higher cost Premier version, unable to transfer data from internet copy to disc copy

Much Improved Process for Excluding Foreign Income
on April 8, 2015
Posted by: timbuktu
Someone took the time to deal with foreign income exclusion. The software also deals well with the fact that people who live in other countries have bank accounts, but aren't hiding their assets offshore. They just pay their bills and have to have a bank account to put their pay in so they can deal with everyday life.
Much needed improvements delivered. Thanks!
What's great about it: No more circular journeys through the software to deal with foreign income exclusion
What's not so great: None that come to mind
