Faster than talking about it

This year was easier than all the years since 2008.
What's great about it: Able to download IRA taxable contributions
What's not so great: Comparison of past years, Didn't go futher than one year.

Options are sometimes unclear

Turbo Tax could use a better UI design. Sometimes there are two options to handle a tax situation. Turbo Tax doesn't always help you understand which is the right path for you before leading you off into the weeds. Take the Foreign Tax Credit. There are two ways to handle it: as a deduction or as a credit. Turbo Tax says that it will help you decide which is better for you. What it tells you is that taking a credit rather than a deduction will likely reduce your tax obligation more. What it doesn't tell you up front is that taking a deduction is a single step that takes seconds, while taking a tax credit is an incredibly complex process that could literally take hours. In my case, the amount of foreign taxes I paid was so small, taking it as a deduction was the obvious choice. I discovered that only after wasting far too much time off in the weeds trying to ferret out a bunch of info that was so hard to find I finally just gave up. The UI would be vastly improved if when there are two possible paths the steps involved are summarized so that you know what you're getting yourself into before you make your choice.
What's great about it: I feel confident my Federal and State returns are complete and accurate.
What's not so great: Turbo Tax sometimes takes me down a complex path when there's a far, far simpler one that suits my tax situation.

Used TurboTax for Years

I've used this program for many years, and it has steadily improved so that filing my own taxes is relatively easy. The step-by-step instructions are generally clear and accurate. My returns are not complicated so the filing process is fairly straightforward. One problem I encountered in filing my 2014 return was the program's failure to e-file my returns after upgrading to the Premier edition. Had to go through some reconfiguration steps in order to accomplish the e-file process. Otherwise, everything went smoothly.
What's great about it: Convenient, Intuitive, Accurate
What's not so great: Trouble with Premier upgrade and SSL connection

TAX PREP FOR DUMB AND ME

OVER ALL IT DID AMAZING JOB OF THE PROCESS OF FILLING A COMPLEX TAX FORM. THE ONLY PART THAT WAS NOT CLEAR WAS USING THE IDENTITY PROTECTION NUMBERS WE WERE ISSUED DUE TO ID THEFT. AS I WRITE THIS I STILL AM NOT SURE IF THE NUMBERS WAS PUT ON MY FORM OR NOT?
What's great about it: SIMPLIFIED A COMPLEX PROCESS
What's not so great: SOME PARTS WERE NOT CLEAR AS TO WHAT WAS REQUIRED.

Very easy to use

I find Turbotax very easy to use. The timesavings is WELL worth the cost of the software.
I do taxes for myself and my mother. Make sure to download Turbotax rather than start the tax documents on-line. It can be a little hard to make sure you are actually downloading the software. You can then do more than one filing (I think the limit is up to 5) for no extra fee to Turbotax. You will have to pay for each State tax return e-file. Federal e-files are free.
What's great about it: Downloaded Turbotax so I could do more than one return
What's not so great: None

TurboTax Deluxe 2014 was perfect for our tax situation. The step-by-step process was super easy to follow. It was also simple to go back to a section for review or to make changes. The instructions were clear, and the extra hints and tips very helpful. I liked how the electronic file was automatically saved without my having to do anything special, so I could stop anytime and pick up later where I left off.
What's great about it: Loved step-by-step process, and the ability to return to any section easily
