Buggier than past years (re: Mac version)
on April 6, 2015
Posted by: mer72
I've been using TT for years now, so know more or less what to expect. Compared with past years, I had the unsettling experience of 3 complete crashes -- each time after the app was behaving oddly. And it took about 5 tries, plus a computer reboot (and another TT crash) to get e-filing to go through; I've never had a problem with that before. Found an error myself in looking over the pdf of the return, so fixed that before e-filing -- but the larger issue there was that TT seems unable to work across 2 states; I'm still worried I may have under/over-counted something, from how items are entered in DC vs NY (the states in question). Still, I'll use it again, since no worse than the options, familiar, and the app will be able to enter my past information readily ...
What's great about it: Transfers data from year to year, most questions/prompts clear
What's not so great: Crashed completely several times, high cost for extra state

Smart Worksheets - option to hide
on April 6, 2015

Program is strong mathematically and accurate with the downloads from employers and financial institutions, but sometimes prompts you to enter data that has already been downloaded (without letting you know what has been downloaded already) This leads to double entries. this occurred in particular with adding back tax-exempt dividends to CT state income.
Please, please give us back the option to view the forms without the "smart worksheets". Up until a few years ago, users could unclick the smart worksheets in the VIEW dropdown box. Having to go to a "print preview" is not a good solution to this. Rather than contacting me with a "prize" , why not let me know you can do something with this. Thanks for your consideration.
In trying to complete an explantaion statement for Foreign tax credit carryover (something the program required me to do), I repeatedly got an error message and warning "Explanation statement not done". After going back and forth many times, I was finally told I had entered "too many characters". In the first place, the program itself caculated the carryover (for both regular and AMT) and knows far better than I how it was done, and in the second place, no one could write an explanation in just a few characters.
Having a smiling face congratulating me on getting a tax return is not rewarding, given that I have foolishly overpaid my taxes and have to apply them all to next years estimated anyway.
Congratulating yourselves on "finding deductions" is a little self-serving, especially for me, since most of them (state taxes in particular) get added back the alternative minimum tax computation.
What's great about it: Quick & accurate caclulation of all values, automatic inclusion of required forms, reasonably good sequence of prompts i
What's not so great: No room to write in the fields, like this one

Need More Experienced Users
on April 6, 2015

Waited six hours for the message to go away and then when we called for assistance, we asked for someone who was experienced using Turbo Tax on a MAC. We immediately knew that these Tech Support were not familiar with using a MAC because everyone kept telling me to right or left click the mouse - a MAC mouse does not do this. All you can do is click once. Problem is still on my screen and I will now have to deal with it on my own.
What's not so great: My system still is showing "Please wait while we verify that everything is up to date"
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Don't be Scared to file your taxes
on April 6, 2015

I was nervous about filing this year since in my mind I thought my filing would be difficult to do myself. Thought I was going to have to get a CPA. I quit working and rolled over a 401k and a 503c into an IRA and made a withdrawal. All I did was answer the questions and fill in the numbers from the 1099s. I was done in 3 days only investing about 1.5 hours each time. This years filing has made me a believer in Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: the simplicity..just have to answer questions
What's not so great: App seemed a little slow
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Bug Blocked State E-file but Charged Anyway
on April 6, 2015
Posted by: jwalker374
Will have to see how this filing works out before deciding to use TurboTax next year. Also will need a refund of my state filing charge since I was blocked from e-filing but was charged before I got to that point. Since I could not find a phone number for support, I could not call to get this fixed. It is so close to the deadline that I am filing by mail. TurboTax has been good in the past, but this experience was not as good.
What's great about it: Thorough Assessment of Income and Deductions
What's not so great: No support available for error showing description too long on AL Schedule D. Had to file by mail after being charged.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

update late
on April 6, 2015
Posted by: marushin
The process was easy and smooth. A negative was when I e-filed ,I completed theprocess and then it told me i couldn't file until I put in the update, So,I had to go back, update, and go through the process(partially) again. It should have "made" me put in the update before itallowed the e-file. Otherwise ok--this was the only negative..
What's great about it: fast and easy accurate
What's not so great: DON'T LIKE BACKTRACKING
Pros: I bought or sold investments
