Easy to File with Turbotax
on April 5, 2015

I have a fairly easy return, except for income across multiple states. The ability to download my W2s and have data transferred across all state returns from the Federal return saves a lot of time. I've been using TurboTax for many years and it is always getting better.
What's great about it: It was easy, as usual
What's not so great: None

I have used turbo tax for many years, it makes a painful chore relatively easy, the ability to download many of the required inputs from brokerage accounts etc make tax time much easier
What's great about it: smooth interface, good in depth information
What's not so great: paying taxes, nothing wrong with the product

Turbo Tax Permier - All situations handled!!
on April 5, 2015

Overall, I have been using Turbo Tax software for 10 years. It remains my favorite, as it has the most current tax rules and presents the questions in a clear, concise manner for user to decide if rule is applicable. Easy to use. Once you have collected all your documentation to prepare taxes, it requires one day (8 hours) to complete, review, print and e-file. Costs has remained constant, while value has improved.
Highly recommended.
What's great about it: Very intuitive to use and navigate to forms
What's not so great: Selecting the right version. Recommended Delux when I needed Premier version.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

Rental Real Estate Sale - Confusing
on April 5, 2015
Posted by: ljho
Some issues I had and/or improvements that can be made:
- This year I sold one of my rental real estate properties for an overall loss. Figuring how to enter the sale into TurboTax was confusing. It was not clear that for a sale you have to edit the property, then "dispose" of the property. Seems to me that once I checked the "I sold of disposed of this property" box, TurboTax should take me right into the questions about the "disposal." It didn't the first time. After some research I found it, entered the info. Then when I went back to correct a few things it DID take me through the questions.
- I sold my property at an overall NOL and looks like I now have the "opportunity" to file form 1045 or 1040X to recover some of the losses from previous years. I am wondering why Turbotax can't do this for me since TurboTax clearly has all of the information already. I have been using it since 2004, and I purchased this property in 2006.
What's great about it: Overall, I am happy with Turbotax. It is streamlined and easy-to-follow for "everyday" tax filing.
What's not so great: As my life gets more complicated, so does trying to fill out the forms!
Pros: I bought or sold investments

you did not let us know in advance that turbo tax deluxe did not cover stock trades as usual. I bought deluxe and had to resell it and then buy what I needed.
What's not so great: the tax due boxes are black background with red letters and I could not read them. Please use a white background next ye

Very helpful

Liked the option for menu-driven or detailed walk-through. However, would like a pop-up or link every time there is a "0" or NO; i.e when I am expecting a deduction, but it says "0" deduction allowed, it would be good to have an explanation as to why so I can research and resolve.
What's great about it: Liked the option of picking from a menu if I am very familiar with an area.
What's not so great: Need a link or popup for further explanation whenever the answer is NO or 0.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

There are buttons to "Print Return" but it doesn't print anything. It requires user to save as a pdf file, get out of the application and then print. This is unnecessarily confusing and inconvenient.
Also, I had to file as an executor this year. Directions are severely lacking in FAQ and in the application's instructions for this event. We baby-boomers are starting to die off -- please help our children with better attention to this area.
What's great about it: The app is overall excellent.
What's not so great: Turbotax no longer prints from the applications.
