Turbo Tax 2014
on April 4, 2015
Posted by: ColoC96
I like the fact that everything is brought over from last year and comparisons are made periodically to assist me in knowing what the figures were from last year and served as reminders. I found that some the explanations were not as clear to me as I wanted, but I was able to figure them out. I also like the error checking and it helps to make me sure that I have completed everything correctly.
I thought because I was upgraded that my state efile would be free so I was surprised by the charge that would have been imposed had I efiled my state.
What's great about it: Walks you through most steps and is easy to understand
What's not so great: Some explanations were difficult to relate to my tax situation

WHY PAY AN ACCOUNTANT
on April 4, 2015
Posted by: SEBAGODAN
I'M PRETTY SURE THAT THIS IS THE SAME SOFTWARE MY ACCOUNTANT USES TO DO OUR RETURNS. ABLE TO OUR RETURNS AND OUR SON'S RETURN FOR 1/4 OF WHAT ACCOUNTANT WAS CHARGING. IN FACT, I THINK I GOT A BETTER RETURN FOR MY SON BY TAKING THE TIME TO COMPARE DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR DEALING WITH HIS EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES. BASED UPON PRIOR RETURNS, I'M NOT SURE ACCOUNTANT DID THIS.
What's great about it: EASY TO USE! WALKS YOU THROUGH EVERY STEP
What's not so great: NONE
Pros: I bought or sold investments

The program worked well, but had to be upgraded.
on April 4, 2015

I have done my taxes with turbo for many years and this is the first time that after buying the basic I had to upgrade twice. I will say that the people on the phone when contacted were helpful and upgraded me with no charge. There was also a charge for the state e-file and I had to call and get that charge also removed. Other than this the filing went well. One suggestion is to have the instructions to the IRS forms somewhere so they can be read if there are any questions instead of going on the forum or calling. If not on the program at least a site to get to them.
What's great about it: It was easy to follow.
What's not so great: Switching to forms died not take you to what you were working on, the actual IRS form
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Why Turbo Tax
on April 4, 2015
Posted by: BMan666
When I prepared my tax with the guide of a tax book, I could see the connections of the various parts of the tax code. With Turbo Tax, it is hidden for the most part. For example, the Sales Tax deduction is done for us, if we choose. Exactly how the deduction is calculated is hidden. Some of the sequential steps seem out of sequence. For example, we put in our income per Turbo Tax only to find out later (in the Roth IRA section) that we have no earned income, per the Tax Code.
Obviously, the Tax Code is the culprit, but the package is still confusing.
What's great about it: The package gets to lead
What's not so great: I don't like the dance
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Shouldn't have to pay for Investment Properties
on April 4, 2015
Posted by: Tobywan
There should be a version of turbotax below Premier that doesn't have Investment Property that costs less. I'm sure MANY people have stocks and dividends but don't have rental property.
What's great about it: It worked
What's not so great: Too expensive
Pros: I bought or sold investments

why require to upgrade for capital gains?
on April 4, 2015
Posted by: mee100
this was a bad decision by turbo tax to require previous year filers to pay more money for the same forms as last year. Will the next year deluxe/premier or what ever it was edition include the capital gains forms?
What's not so great: why require to upgrade for capital gains?
Pros: I bought or sold investments
