Again, made taxes logical and easy to perform. As a person who has done his taxes himself all his life, I continue to depend on the technical completeness and accuracy of the turbo tax product to address all the tax issues that one may need to encounter without researching tax laws, codes, etc.
For my simple addition of some rental property forms, I was glad to find that there was no charge for these features which could have been easily completed by hand. It would have been a negative if this required an upgraded version to complete.

Pretty easy, but takes a long time to print
on April 3, 2015

The printing process seems to take forever. Especially on the California return, with its goofy-looking graphics, my printer has a hard time and I had to stop and start several times.
On a more serious note, the question on Form 1099-MISC that asks whether the amount in box 7 is from the taxpayer's usual type of work leads to an incorrect result. Just because the compensation is not from his usual occupation does not mean than it is not subject to self-employment tax. I had to add Form 1040-SE last year myself, so I was more careful this year.
What's great about it: Easy to enter data; questions are usually clear
What's not so great: Question about 1099-MISC not usual work leads to incorrect result

Worst week of my life!
on April 3, 2015

Altho I could clearly see them, it stated it could not locate any prior returns, so I entered everything by hand. Until I got to the point where I had to purchase an upgrade to finish my return. Apparently you must have owned a pet to get past that safety measure . I spent 2 days trying to find where to enter the info on my states extension payment, finally scratched out the info that I could not change and finished the return it by writing it in by hand, so now I have misinformation saved on this years tax return. Total waste of my time and money. What happened to Turbo Tax?
What's great about it: Absolutely nothing!
What's not so great: Everything, kept running into brick walls...my head hurts!

Struggled with my 1099-C
on April 3, 2015

I've been using TurboTax software for numerous years and I've always had a great experience. This year has been very trying because I was issued a 1099-C and the software would not support it. After about 12 hours (literally) on the phone with Turbo Tax representatives I finally spoke with a young man tonight name Tom Murphy. He walked me through areas that had me puzzled for weeks. He not only answered my questions but he literally walked me through my return. He is such a godsend. He was so calm and polite. I am so thankful for Mr Murphy. I feel very comfortable with my return and I can finally put 2014 to bed. Thank you Tom Murphy!!! You rock!
What's great about it: Software very user friendly
What's not so great: Turbotax software needs to either support 1099-C's or take it off the menu
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Used to Be Better

I bought Turbo Tax Premier and latest Quicken Property Manager, and Turbo Tax It's Deductible, a pricey combination which used to cover tax topics very well. In the last two years, its performance has been less than sterling. Up through Turbo Tax 2012, it was wonderful for covering all topics very well. Starting in 2013, after registering every item paid in Quicken, Turbo Tax asked for more detailed itemization of each expense in each on line and local store. Having spent so many hours recording each payment and buy, I opted to get less back rather than start over for more details on purchasing. This year, I found that after detailing each individual purchase deducted in Quicken 2015, the software would not copy these details to Turbo Tax and asked me to relist every item separately in Turbo Tax after I had done it diligently in Quicken. Likewise, every medical item, already detailed in Quicken, was not automatically transferred to Turbo Tax. I had previously purchased separately both Rental Property manager which would not transfer to turbo tax and Intuit's medical records software which, likewise, would not transfer. It is frustrating to be asked to list each item bought in each vendor again in Turbo Tax when it was previously listed in Quicken. Property management topics are transferred well and I have come to expect other items, like medical deductions, to do so as well. Keep in mind, I listed each and every prescription from each and every pharmacy in Quicken, but then Turbo Tax asked me to relist each vendor, items and totals for tax back up documents, rather than just copying them from the carefully itemized lines in Quicken. I would prefer the software to copy the lists from Quicken, once each and every doctor cost, prescription, and medical equipment purchase has been listed directly to Turbo Tax or I would use free or cheaper software available on line. I only pay the extra cost for the automatic transfer of information. Finally, as the years have progressed, I have found Turbo Tax worse and worse at guiding through the state returns. At this point, it is closer to a free electronic filing system required in my state than software to help explain the process for the state returns step by step.
What's great about it: links well with Quicken for many areas
What's not so great: in recent years has gotten worse for basic deductions and state
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

2014 Taxes

I did not feel quite as confident on my AZ state return as I did on the Federal. The program was just not as sophisticated, and relied on me having tax knowledge beyond my understanding.
What's great about it: Federal is quite straightforward
What's not so great: State form not as developed as fed, a little disappointing
