Excellent Product

I have used Turbo Tax software many times in the past and it seems to me it gets better and better. I file a fairly complex return with numerous types of income and deductions and Turbo Tax handles all of them with ease. I moved out of the US last year, so my 2015 tax return should be yet another challenge for Turbo Tax when I file in 2016!
What's great about it: Ease of use, tutorial
What's not so great: would like a "take me to section" button
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Great Program

I was pleasantly surprised at how simple the entry process was. For most of my input we walked right through the program. I will definitely use TurboTax next year.
K1s are a problem with so many variables within the document itself. Most of the data entry is simple and straight forward. A few Codes are confusing and difficult to determine where to enter the data such as Depletion, Royalties, etc. Not certain TurboTax can simplify a near-impossible task. AVOID companies reporting via K1s.
There appear to be two entry methods to show which state you are receiving Muni Fund tax exempt dividends from: a dropdown box where, for mutual funds, you can select "More Than One State" and a check box for the same entry. If you want your CA return to acknowledge out-of-state dividends as Taxable, you can not enter both; you must not check the box but just enter the "More Than One State" in the dropdown box. Do both and the CA return will enter those dividends as CA Tax Exempt when they are not.
What's great about it: Questions asked are easy to follow and lead to the correct data entry points.
What's not so great: Ambiguity re which states tax exempt dividens are from.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I AM VERY PLEASED WITH ALL ASPECTS OF MY TURBO TAX 2014, INCLUDING THE AUTOMATIC UPGRADE FROM DELUXE TO PREMIER.
THANK YOU.
What's great about it: EVERYTHING
What's not so great: YOU GLOSS OVER EMAILING TAX RETURNS, LIKE THERE IS NOTHING TO IT. IT IS A BIT INVOLVED, HOWEVER.

Taxes Made Easy
on April 3, 2015

Overall a 5, but I had difficulty trying to get back to a choice I wanted to change on a state underpayment form that would not let me file electronically. I finally had to delete the state return entirely and re-do it. (Not a particularly big deal.)
More seriously, on the state (NM) taxes, I was assessed a tax underpayment penalty (in spite of the fact I was due a refund from the state) apparently because I made a large third quarter payment due to cashing in some investments early in September. The program seemingly imputed that lump sum capital gains as though it were distributed throughout the year, making my earlier est. tax payments too low. At least, without any information from the program as to why it occurred, that's the conclusion I came to.
My wife and I hold separate investment and checking accounts. It would be helpful to have incomes from these different accounts clearly ascribed to one or the other of us, so I wouldn't have to do the arithmetic (which can always lead to an error.)
Overall though, the program was user friendly, intuitive and fast. I got through to tech support quickly on one issue and she was very helpful.
What's great about it: User friendly, helpful response from tech support on a question
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Don't like upgrades
on April 3, 2015

In the past, I have always used Basic because I am a CPA and know the tax laws. This year, I purchased Turbotax Deluxe. I didn't like that Turbotax required me to pay for upgrades to enter a Schedule C and investments. I will explore other options to prepare my Form 1040 and state return in the future.

Very simple

Seems Turbo Tax always wants to update the software every time I log on?? That worries me a bit, especially if I file early (what if I file and then later there become updates that are necessary after I have filed). I waited until April 3rd this year and it still is downloading updates as of April 2nd.
What's great about it: Easily transmits data from prior years returns. Very accurate.
What's not so great: I usually bought Deluxe, this year I had to buy Premier. That version seems too expensive.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I love the software overall and I would recommend it to anyone
What's great about it: The ease of use and the overall accuracy and calculations
What's not so great: Does not allow for compatibility between the desktop and online versions of the software
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
