Revised 1099-B Solutions
on April 3, 2015

Fantastic product. This is the 7th year we have used it and it never fails to deliver.
What's great about it: The Turbo Tax help on the new 1099-B reporting of adjusted cost basis saved me thousands.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Easier than last year

I was surprised that even with mortgage interest payments, state, real estate, excise taxes and other reasonable deductions that the standard deduction amount for our situation was not quite met. Seems to me that people that don't own homes and property really get a tax bargain relative to those that do.
The capital gains calculation set up was a little better this year with Turbo Tax Premium, but that was in large part to changes in reporting by the investment company.
What's great about it: Data inport from previous year file was much better than before
What's not so great: Listing Standard Deduction Amount before itemization would have saved me some time.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Makes taxes a snap
on April 3, 2015

There is no sense in doing taxes on paper. I use TurboTax, and it guides me through and checks everything. I get the refund I deserve, and pay what I truly owe. Instead of spending days with paper, as we used to, I spent maybe eight hours total, including frazzle. Digital filing is easy, and direct deposit of refund is perfect. I use it every year. And my daughter, who has begun using it on line, finds it easy and quick too.
What's great about it: It used to take days, now it takes hours, and done perfectly.
What's not so great: None that I can think of.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax Still Rocks for this Retiree
on April 3, 2015

I have used TurboTax for many years. It sure beats reading IRS-provided booklets and form completion instructions of yesteryear! I find the User Interface to be easy to follow, understand and navigate as needed. I also like the way it shows your prior year info which serves as a reminder of what may still be needed for the current tax year.
What's great about it: Continue to use TurboTax for years now...very easy, efficient, logical.
What's not so great: None that come to mind.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Long time user.

Apart from the hassle of having to download the upgrade, this year's experience was what I've come to expect. Beyond that, downloading from my brokerage accounts worked more smoothly this year. I hope that next year will bring back the inclusion of the schedule D functions without the added price for acquiring the Premium version.
What's great about it: No learning curve: all familiar and convenient
What's not so great: bummer that Schedule D filers have to upgrade to Premier
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Shocked by my very High Tax

We about went crazy trying to do our taxes even with TurboTax. Things should be made much simpler. When we switch between the forms and the easy step, it should return to same exact spot you'd left.
What's great about it: You do the arithmetic
What's not so great: Taxes are MUCH TOO COMPLICATED
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Bugs or missing functionality
on April 3, 2015

I have used TurboTax for more than 10 years, and each of the last 4 yearsit seems that it has been dumbed down by which I mean that it is harder and harder to enter info via forms rather than step-by-step. I can no longer find a way to add a new copy of an existing form when needed, I get into loops and have to close out TurboTax to get out. I don't mean programming loops as in a coding error, rather functional loops, being asked to do something that i have just done. Right now I am trying to find out how to work on my estimated taxes, and to print out Maine estimated forms since they seem not to send them out. When I efiled, I got to that point, but didn't have time to do it then as I had to leave, so I didn't complete that function.
I also had a problem with my second state functionality. I downloaded it once, entered in all my info, and was told that I owed $90. I did something, I know not what, and the state downloaded again wiping out all my info. I did not get to any screens that asked me to enter info the second time, TurboTax said that all my info had transferred from the federal, but now I owe $0. So although I efiled this version, I am not comfortable that it is correct.
It seems that there are less buttons along the top to allow one to select parts of the process to go to rather than going through all of the questions.
In summary, my perception is that it is becoming less and less user friendly, and takes more and more time to get through it particularly if one doesn't have all of the numbers at once. I am particularly unhappy about this version which seems significantly worse that last year..
What's not so great: Bugs or missing functionality
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Excellent now that TT has restored TT Deluxe
on April 3, 2015

I've used TT since 2001 and think I have always given it a 5 star rating. This year would be no different if it were not for the earlier mismanagement of TT Deluxe 2014 (i.e. deleting some of the features without informing the public). I was ready to abandon TT this year, but fortunately the company recognized and admitted its mistake and restored TT Deluxe features, as well as offered a refund to those who bought TT Premier to get these features. That flap was a big deal, but otherwise TT is the way to do your taxes.
What's great about it: Easy to use and comprehensive
What's not so great: Poor handling of TT Deluxe
