Mostly good - only 2 problems this year
on April 2, 2015

When trying to sign in to pay, it asks for either email or user id but it only accepts user id.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Two problems, 1. Does not handle spouses with the same first name very well, and 2. see below in review

Still need to improve experience with K-1 forms
on April 2, 2015
Posted by: TMCSoftware
Better than other top tax packages (I know because I tested the top 3 packages last year), but still lacks in the K-1 arena.
1) Can't import K-1 tax forms 2) A perfectly legal K-1 with income in 2 or more of the first 3 cells can't be entered in TurboTax as a single K-1 3) TurboTax does not automatically handle all K-1 entries
What's great about it: Works as expected except for K-1 forms
What's not so great: Can't send TurboTax an email with requested bug fixes; can't import K-1s; doesn't automatically handle all K-1 inputs
Pros: I bought or sold investments

The interview format made it easy to input the numbers without having any special tax vocabulary. When I got to the reveiew stage it was easy to flip between the interview answers and the tax forms. This made it easy to double check the impact and accuracy of interview answers and to verify that each tax form line actually did reflect 100% of the raw data I'd gathered for input ---- e.g. that I'd not overlooked a big contribution in a list of charities.
The data import feature from my investment custodians was a life saver. As a retired IRS employee I take pride in delivering a complete and accurate return. I'd be one distracted dude right now if TurboTax and they hadn't teamed up to transmit pages and pages of mind numbing numbers into dozens of highly precise boxes.
Also especially welcomed the effortless data transfer to my State return and the way Turbo Tax adjusted for the State's different treatment of some credits and deductions.
I signed off on the final package with satisfaction and confidence. As I have for more than 10 years of gradually increasingly complex returns.
What's great about it: Walked me through but allowed easy jumps between interview and forms without me getting lost.
What's not so great: That whole thing about having to upgrade. Residual worry about what to buy next year.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Excellent but lack documentation Its Deductible
on April 2, 2015

Everything seems to work great. Importing financial data is a great help but not always easy.
Entering charitable non-cash contributions - Using Its Deductible makes it very easy but the documentation on how to get a detailed list of items and their worth should be readily available. There is no help file that points you to the location but I finally was able to find a full list in one of the forms (not a worksheet?). This should be fixed.
What's great about it: Excellent intuitive SW
What's not so great: Lack of documentation on Its Deductible
Pros: I bought or sold investments

The system is very slow! Also it is impossible to fix transfered data from last years forms. Spific example: trying to update State Tax information form transfered from federal form and base information from last year. Data was wrong last year and could not fixed this years form. No way to delete it or edit or etc.! Really did not make any differents in calculations but basic information was wrong.
What's great about it: Very accurate and relatively easy to use for the most part.
What's not so great: Very Slow!! Hard to update transfered data!

Dropped Forms
on April 2, 2015

Because I have used Turbo Tax over the last several years, entering this years tax information was simple and easy. Since I have and will continue to have a K-1 form, I will require the appropriate forms. Please continue to include them in the basic (Deluxe) version. Also, when I moved to the California State calculations, Turbo Tax told me that my state was complete. However, the program did not ask for my state adjustments related to my K-1 form--I had one. Therefore, I manually made the adjustment by going to that section of the state calculation. Printing: When printing, the buttons to push are confusing. I have to cancel printing to get out when I finish. Why doesn't Turbo Tax know that I have printed or give me a box to say "Done."
What's great about it: Switch to Premier was seamless
What's not so great: Had to switch; printing awakward

I love TurboTax - but... you better know what you

Aside from the fact that I was owed $8,000 and it showed instead that I owed $15,000, a small $23K difference.... And I had to print out all the forms to find the error. Other than that, I love being able to import data from my brokerage - saves a lot of time on schedule D!!
I think past years Turbo Tax may have been slightly better...
It's Deductible is a life saver as well
What's great about it: imports my data
What's not so great: I had trouble finding some double dipping
