Fast Tax Preparation
on April 2, 2015
Posted by: BHNelson
One of the fastest tax preparations I have ever done. And I used the more detailed 'walk me through it' method, so I got asked a lot of questions that didn't apply. But now I'm sure everything was covered that needed to be.
What's great about it: Made it easy, and quick.
What's not so great: Some repetition

This form used to be included in the Deluxe package but this year I had to pay an extra $30.00 for the Premier package to receive this form.
What's great about it: Was included
What's not so great: Not anymore

RELATIVELY EASY

All went well until tried to file and the "Review" showed minor discrepancies with a couple of mortgage related worksheets. I found it very frustrating actually finding the worksheets. I found them and made corrections. Errors resulted from using Quicken tax export as input to TurboTax. My Quicken Essentials info for mortgage holder was essentially a nickname where TT required actual address, taxpayer number, etc. which had been entered separately from the 1098. The error that was detected was well hidden and its location was not obvious to find. I should have been directed to the worksheet list that had the errors flagged with red marks. Once there it was easy to correct. "Help" was no help. I had to spend a frustrating time until the list magically appeared. Still not sure how I stumbled upon the solution.
What's great about it: VERY THOROUGH
What's not so great: DIFFICULT TO CORRECT MINOR ERRORS ON WORKSHEETS

Still the Way to Go

I think TurboTax is still the best way to file taxes. Your dramatic increase in price for investors, was unwelcome.
What's great about it: Easy to follow. Good helps.
What's not so great: Cost, constant updates indicate lack of readiness at tax season start.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Helped to navigate complex tax year
on April 2, 2015

I have used Turbo Tax for a number of years and I am sure will continue. However, I would appreciate a provision in the Premier edition to assist in completing a return that would allow for limited income and expense associated with the small amount of consulting work I do from time to time.
What's great about it: Accurate calculations, Ease of use, Easy to go back and forth from forms to step by step
What's not so great: Version purchased did not have support for business income and expense.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

Although TurboTax is advertised as simple and easy to use, it is not. However, I suspect it is as close as possible since IRS itself is very complicated and becomes more so every year.
