Worth the money and there is room for improvement

Overall, if you choose to prepare your own taxes, Turbo Tax provides a comforting level of structure and support. I've been using this product for many years and have not been tempted to use anything else.
The guided interview is helpful for those of us who do not remember all the detail involved. I have used both ways and have gone back to the guided interview process.
Navigation can be annoying or downright challenging if there is one particular item you need to update, like one medical expense that was overlooked. There is no easy,fast way to get exactly where you want to go without going through multiple screens. That is the downside of the interview process.
One nice feature is that the program lists what you put in the same spot on the previous year's return so you can compare. It would be nice if the state tax return would do the same thing.
What's great about it: Like the guided interview and level of detail
What's not so great: Don't like the requirements to list certain expenses: all doctors, etc.,

Some problems

I've used Turbotax for many years. This year has been the most frustrating. First it started with upgrade to premier to input royalties, next it would not register my pension as taxable income and help couldn't figure out why, so they said start over causing a lot of input twice! Estimated tax is difficult to alter, especially in CA state, where I had to go to the form to do it. I think over the years the program has become less user friendly.
What's great about it: Did not have to fill out forms
What's not so great: Had to upgrade for royalties, had to start over due to glitch in program the help couldn't fix, CA state est tax method

In years past I used the Basic edition. This year I had to upgrade to the Premium edition for the same forms as in the past. I'll shop around next year.
What's great about it: Step by step instructions
What's not so great: Tripled my cost.

The entire process for both State and Federal returns took about five (5) hours. Found the review process helpful. Overall, quite satisfied.
What's great about it: For someone who has used TurboTax, the feel is familiar. Glad to see the questions about insurance.

previous years processing return with turbo tax have been been easily done. this years state return issues required to much time and frustration.
What's great about it: When it walks me thru the selections i feel that inputed data is used correctly to process return.
What's not so great: Processing of state return was a nightmare. spent an hour with support personel to just get state forms to load.

Either I am getting better or you have improved your software. I think it is your software. I have been using Turbo Tax since 1994 or earlier, and have never finished my taxes so fast with no problems. Great job, thanks, John
