makes it so easy
on March 29, 2015

I've been using Turbo Tax for years, hooked by the transfer of previous year records, download of data, its search for all the necessary information and possible problems and deductions, etc., etc. In this first year of retirement, I thought I might have to go to a tax professional to help with the new factors -- withdrawal from retirement accounts, Social Security, etc. -- but that too was handled effortlessly, with a lot of advice about arcane rules that increased my confidence.
What's great about it: Made it easy, even with a new situation (retirement)
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Tax file 2014
on March 29, 2015
Posted by: Ancmiller
My dependents have to file their own return. Needs to be a way to auto populate parents and siblings return information into each tax return.
Better explanation of 1098-T is needed. Where and how it should be recorded with children that file a separate tax return.
Should be tax tips/questions that will help with filing the best way for dependents that must file separately. How to determine the best way to file (for example: should the child claim themselves and the parent file as head of household or should parent claim child). What is the best tax scenario for the tax payer.
What's great about it: auto populate previous year
What's not so great: dependents filing separate returns not user friendly

Form 8606 Flaw
on March 29, 2015

Conversions of IRAs To Roths did not initially produce Form 8606, thereby incorrectly reporting all the conversion as taxable. Turbotax did not pick up info from 2013 Turbotax return. This would have cost me an extra $12,000 in taxes and was cleared up through phone advice from a Turbotax expert, the phone number for which I could find only through Google, not on the Turbotax site.
Also, the Virginia state return is primitive. It could use a refresh.
What's not so great: See below

Instructions/Verifications
on March 29, 2015

TurboTax works well, but was surprised that I had to pay a fee to file my state taxes electronically - especially since the state requires electronic filing. Since I purchased TurboTax including the state filing, I did not expect to be charged yet another fee on top of that.
Also surprised that I could not print out a verification that I had filed federal or state. I probably could have at the time had I realized the option was not given, but by the time it was realized it was to late to print that screen.
Discovered something else this year. In changing my will I have now made provision for a trust, and had difficulty determining if TurboTax software includes filing a trust tax return. Via the internet it seems only the Business form will do that, but in a call with TurboTax I was told that I could use Home and Business OR Premier (I usually use Premier). So, I'm still not sure what would be needed in later years to include a filing ia return for an individual trust.
What's great about it: Walked me though filing - relatively easy
What's not so great: Was unaware state return also had to be filed electronically - and a fee assessed

Will still use Turbo Tax in the Future.

You did not communicate the fact that I needed an upgraded package as compared to what I used in the past. Since I am filing by mail I hope I am still eligible for a refund. Also, I don't have complicated investing issues. So, I really don't understand why you changed the format on the deluxe software requiring me to pay more for something I don't need.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Changed the deluxe software requiring an upgrade.

Time to try a new program
on March 29, 2015
Posted by: MacUser65
I have been a long time user (since 1997) and this year the TurboTax family of products really did not compare well with my past 18 years of use.
1) TurboTax removed product features causing confusion about which version you needed compared to previous filings.
2) Program has been very unstable on my Mac. More crashes than all other years combined. - most issues with online links and chat.
3) "Error check" produced many false errors for my review. (i.e., forms that i never visited - requiring a "zero" to be entered)
TurboTax and Intuit need to better support Mac's (Quicken-mac version is a joke) in the future. This mac user is looking for a better tax program next year.
What's great about it: Easy loading of data for past users
What's not so great: version confusion & crashing
Pros: I bought or sold investments
