Good for US only - difficult for foreign income
on March 29, 2015

Foreign accounts, foreign rental income, dividends, taxes already paid..., especially, If from different countries do not work well. Every brokerage account listed does allow only one foreign country. Especially in Europe an issue as taxes on dividend payments have to be withheld by the broker. Very, very cumbersome. It appears better to hire a CPA, costs a few $ more, rewards with many hours less.
What's great about it: Good guidance through process, if all US only
What's not so great: Foreign income and taxes paid
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I have been using Turbo Tax since 1987 and still feel that it's the best thing going out there.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Took away stock sales from Deluxe version.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Not suitable if you day trade.!

If you have a ton of transactions to be imported from broker, the software fails miserably. Even though the information exists, most of it comes over blank or has incorrect dates. Requires a lot of manual typing/correction
What's great about it: Most features work as expected
What's not so great: Import from Broker failed miserably
Pros: I moved

What's great about it: Uses data from previous year
What's not so great: Omitted some of previous year information
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I tried for 4 hours to fix 2 problems with my return that would not efile before asking for help---so I wasted 4 hours. Your tax expert helped me in 10 minutes. One problem was deleting a form that was carried over from a previous year that was no longer needed and one of my K1's had a mistake your agent recognized immediately.

TT Premium Review
on March 29, 2015
Posted by: yourproductisok
While you still get access to the Schedule C forms in TurboTax 2014 Premium, in the 2013 Premium TT I had the step by step instructions that came with it. I just looked up the form from last year's return and plugged in the numbers accordingly. The software conveniently wants me to upgrade for a nominal fee to have the Business Edition for step by step instructions. As soon as H&R Block gets their product in better shape I will be switching.
What's great about it: Familiar Interface
What's not so great: Schedule C Step by Step is Crippled

Turbo tax review
on March 29, 2015
Posted by: MadMotz
In general was happy with Turbo Tax.
One item that I did not like:
After reopening turbo tax, was prompted to allow updates to tax forms. I allowed this each time requested. However, after update, it did not take me to where I left off previously in my return, it took me to beginning, as if I was starting a new return. I then had to locate where I left off.
Also, several times I switched to the step process to review a previously complete area. After review of that area, I went back to steps to proceed when I had left off, and it would not expand to all top areas, and it was necessary to go back through previously completed topics.
What's great about it: Provided understandable process to complete taxes
What's not so great: See below
