Saving Encrypted return
on March 29, 2015
Posted by: lsmith03049
I hate that I can not save an encrypted copy without entering my username/password to Turbotox. What happens if I need to open the return and:
a) No longer have a turbotax account b) I'm not connected to the internet
What's not so great: Can't save encrypted return without logging in.

Needed to file a 1040X due to late arrival of 1099B.
Working my way through the program left me hanging until the end and then was not sure what I was sending the IRS.
Wanted to see print out as pdf file but just got the same circle of garbled gook. Until I printed out the file and decided it was correct.
What's great about it: program fits most of my requirements
What's not so great: rewview, pdf files and clearity has become merky

Could Be Easier

TurboTax is a terrific application for an accurate tax filing, however there are a few areas that could be simplified. First for Charitable contributions, I organize my material alphabetically, Turbo Tax provides prompts based on the sequence of last years contribution entity. It would be much easier and time saving to provide the list in alphabetical order. Second, since Social security and Medicare are calculated taxes, why not populate the fields and allow overrides if required.
What's great about it: Import option is terrific
What's not so great: Charitable donation input tooooo cumbersome

Kathryn from the Help Center was amazing. After I spent a great deal of time trying to update one entry, she had me e-mail her a protected copy of my return and after checking it she told me what to do by clicking on forms.
What's great about it: finally received great assistance from a rep named Kathryn
What's not so great: Could not readily find a way to get into the return to make corection in placement of decimal

Turbo Verb-O

I am disappointed in this year's TurboTax. It should have the most cutting edge bells and whistles if working with people's taxes - important! Had to start my whole return over again because once you start you cannot simply import last year's taxes, if you hadn't realized they weren't already in there. Confusing passwords with saving files.
Also confusing was the verbiage about charitable contribution carryovers. Maybe I was just anxious for a refund and hoping, because TurboTax doesn't state its purpose as "Filing Your Taxes," so much as "Calculating Your Refund."
Also, I thought I was going to get a physical disc to do taxes on, but now that I think of it, - that probly would not load last year's taxes either.
p.s. Don't ask me why my tax file, when I tried to save the entire thing as a pdf, was 650 pages and crashed Adobe. On, now- to try to complete the final filing submission of my mere 93 pages.
What's great about it: Good for importing and if planning ahead, incorporating prior year data
What's not so great: Somewhat confusing esp. this year and had to start over

TT is good overall, as usual, but downgrading the Deluxe edition was definitely a huge mistake. A price adjustment may be in order, but a 50% increase (to get the deleted function in Premier) is uncalled for. As a result of the change I also got a copy of H&R and was using them in parallel.
H&R opens in flash vs. TT. Some of the TT delay is apparently due to the checking for updates, but I would rather have faster opening and less frequent updates. TT is also much slower switching between step-by-step and forms modes.
My last criticism has to do with Form 1116. TT has a very detailed description of how it works internally in order to have the forms in the correct sequence for e-filing with the IRS. As a former programmer, it seems to me that a lot of this could/should be programmed into the product (eg. prompting the user to insure that the 1116's are created in the correct order).
All of that said, I will probably sticking with TT for next year.
What's great about it: Good overall
What's not so great: Too slow to open and switch modes. Form 1116 too messy.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
