Why did you ruin your Basic product?
on March 25, 2015

I have used TT Basic for many years. I was not please when I found out Basic only handled EZ forms. I bought the Deluxe, more money. It bombed when I tried to input a K-1. Deluxe said I had to upgrade to Premier. More money. I wasted 2 hours trying do the upgrade. I called support - incident # 411234299. Brian was very helpful. He was the only positive part of the tax chore this year. He stayed on the phone for 1-1/2 hours to get a work-around. He did a good job and I rate him excellent.
Turbotax I rate as poor. I should have been able to do all this with Basic as in prior years. Removing functionality from Basic was a bad move.
What's great about it: NONE!
What's not so great: It cost me time, money and caused considerable frustration.

Have been using Turbo tax since 1995 to do my own taxes and have never had a problem or an audit.
What's great about it: As always a pretty straight forward tax experience that was easy
What's not so great: Hate doing K-1"s! Too many steps and kind of confusing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

What otherwise would have taken hours if not days was made into a painless experience of about 1 hour.
What's great about it: Takes you Step by Step
What's not so great: Some questions not fully explained, however few.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

I was pleased that you consented to update me to the Premier version from the Deluxe at no cost, but removing the investment returns from the Deluxe form was merely a clever and sly method of raising the price.
I also used a free version of H&R Block software which i found to be less complete and more difficult to use than Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Very easy and complete to use.
What's not so great: Expensive. I have been using the Turbo Tax Advantage, but i find that I can save serious money by buying it locally.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Know Your Income Streams Before You Buy
on March 25, 2015

Been using TurboTax forever. Their decision this year to prompt users to buy Premium instead of the previous Deluxe was either a brilliant move or a bonehead move by Intuit . I prefer to think they are brilliant and planned all along to make the software changes because it encourages us now-retired Baby Boomers to buy the more comprehensive Premium software to do what we did with Deluxe previously - that is to account for all the income streams produced by the investments we have that got us to the point we could comfortably retire. Maybe with Premium, we will use even more features that we did not know about. Even though Intuit did a less than stellar job of advising registered users of the coming change, they did realize the issue and, at no charge, upgraded the software for those of us who had always used the investment sections when they were included in the less expensive program.
What's great about it: Almost ignorance-proof.
What's not so great: Help screens often veer off into CPA speak but are still, usually, helpful.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Refund Pros ans Cons

In the section where I could find no errors, I meant by comparison with my responses from previous years. So, I put in zeros where previously I had left blanks and it then let me through. But then, when it did its final check before e-filing, it said that I had made changes in a particular section and that it could not e-file my return until I had gone back and removed the changes. So I went back and changed things back to the way they were. Then the error checking section again identified errors in that section and would not let me pass.
What's great about it: Sections were clear and concise. It was easy to move in and out of a section and to back up and change something in a s
What's not so great: Last year it wouldn't allow me to e-file my state return and kept refering me to a section where I could find no errors.

GUI was much friendlier and explanations were clearer than 2013 version. Schedule K interface and step-through process was smoother and less stressful.
