Expected More From TT Premium
on March 23, 2015
Posted by: Kirue
Like most users with 1099-B transactions, I was forced to upgrade to TT Premium after years of using Deluxe. Consequently, I expected a much more sophisticated interface, but that was not the case.
New 2014 IRS regs require brokers to report bond premium amortization amounts, which are deductible from interest. However, if entered as Box 11 bond amortization, TT can't distinguish between taxable and tax-exempt bond amortization so it prorates the amount between the two. If the amortization applies only to tax-exempt bonds, it's necessary to create two separate 1099-INT forms for each brokerage so that the deduction is applied to Form 1040 line 8b--not to Schedule B. Very klugey!
Also, my printed state return (DC) includes copies of a number of federal forms that have not been required to be attached for years. This makes for many unnecessary pages in the print file. On the other hand, nothing is mentioned about the 1099-R form that *is* required to be attached.
I truly hope the 2015 version makes it simpler and more intuitive to enter tax-exempt bond premium amortization and accrued interest paid.
What's great about it: Familiar functions; reliability
What's not so great: Forced upgrade to Premium; difficult to adjust tax-exempt interest; out-of-date state requirements

Second year I have used TurboTax Premier Edition and will continue using this tax preparation program. It takes the complication and mess out of filing taxes in our convoluted tax system. I would recommend this program to anyone that wants to do it themselves.
What's great about it: Easy to follow instructions to fill out the complicated forms.
What's not so great: System became stuck and had to back door the program to complete.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Nice improvements for 2015
on March 23, 2015

Each year Turbo Tax goes more smoothly. I retired from a tax practice in 2010, so I understand how to put a return together and really appreciate that I don't need to go through lots of steps before input. Also, I appreciate having the instructional steps and questions available on new tax law or unfamiliar transactions.
The problem I had this year and last is that in the review process the references are to the tax return line (fine) but a reference to the input line would help me make the change required - better yet, a link to the screen to fix the problem. I went through every screen on my state return twice and did not find where to make the change. So, I changed something else to make it work.
What's great about it: I really appreciated the improvements to 1099-B input.
What's not so great: Review and correct - hard to find location to make correction
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TurboTax is a great product for the average individual to complete their federal taxes. The ease of use and accuracy of the software is a great value for the money. The only con is that you have to obtain the upper end editions for more complex filings.
What's great about it: Ease of Use; Accuracy of computations
What's not so great: Have to obtain premier edition for more complexities
