What's not so great: Wants to update tax files each time used
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

My friend TurboTax

I have used TurboTax for several years, finding it easy to use and straightforward -- except for two problems: 1. New York State taxes interest on municipal bonds from other states. If the bond pays interest directly to you, the information is easy to enter. But if you have 0% coupon bonds, interest falls under the "Original Issue Discount" (OID) category; your broker will tell you the amount, but it is not reported to IRS and therefore not a direct entry to the system. I finally figured out the answer: treat the OID as if it were a direct payment. TurboTax didn't explain this; I had to figure it out. 2. There is no way with TurboTax to enter the charitable gift portion of a Deferred Gift Annuity. In my case, the gift was through stock transfer; which can easily be entered into the system; but the amount of the deduction is less than the amount transferred. When I made the gift I was given a sheet of calculations to attach to my tax return; but there's no way to attach that to an e-filed return. I called the TurboTax Help line for advice; we finally figured out that if I reduced the transfer values proportionate to the amount I was entitled to claim, the practical result would be the correct amount. In this case, I was entitled to claim 71% of the totaltransferred; by adjusting share amounts by 71% I was able to generate a result within 12 cents of the number I needed! So the Help desk and I were able to make TurboTax do the job.
What's great about it: Information is easy to enter; instructions (except two instances) are clear.
What's not so great: I had two problems this year; but phone calls to TurboTax helped me deal with them.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Easy Way to File Taxes

This is an easy product to use. It walks you through the process by asking questions along the way. The charitable contributions piece is especially when you give household items and clothing to charity. This is a very nice guide to help value those contributions. In the past we had undervalued almost all of these items. Explanations of income and deductions are vague and could be improved.
What's great about it: Walks you through most tax situations
What's not so great: Some of the explanations to certain tax situations are vague
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Am and engineer not a CPA, but have been able do my own taxes since the 80s using program. Includes a Schedule F and investments. It is mostly easy to use, but help is not that great.
What's great about it: Download from financial institution; carry over info;
What's not so great: Should do RMD calc; going back is cumbersome

Does the easy stuff well

Still the best out there in my opinion. Prior years, interview script was too comprehensive, hard to skip irrelevant pieces. Better now, you can skip elements you know are not relevant. Some sections of the interviews, for more complex elements, simply walk you through the form lines using incomprehensible IRS-speak and the help...doesn't.
What's great about it: Brokerage and bank downloads save lots of time. Keeps full running status, no more "ATM Surprise" at the end.
What's not so great: Poor interview and help for anything complex like ATM.

Great process, high price

I have used Turbo Tax for many years and will likely continue to use it. It is very easy to use and allows most people to do their own taxes with minimum tax knowledge (unless they have a very complex return with lots of business expenses or real estate). However, it does seem that there are many competitors entering the field while Quicken is raising prices through changes in the capabilities of each product category and actual price increases. They have a great franchise, but they risk losing their market leadership unless they are cognizant of that issue.
What's great about it: Very easy to use.
What's not so great: Seems like the price keeps increasing
