Great for many reasons

I really like TurboTax, have used for many years and will continue to use it. It reduces data entry by remembering the previous years data; it's thorough and mostly logical and extremely helpful. For married military with residence / domicile in another state, the process is still awkward: need to have the CD (can't use the web version) file Fed MFJ, then re-file a second "mock" Fed as MFS to get one State done, and possibly need a third "mock" Fed as MFS to do the other State. This work-around solution has been around for years now -- it's annoying and not so straight-forward...
What's great about it: remembers last year, is very thorough
What's not so great: handling of different state returns needs improvement

STEP-BY-STEP

AFTER YOU FINISH AN INPUT OR EDIT, AND CLICK "UPDATE" AND THEN "CONTINUE", THE SOFTWARE REVERTS TO THE TOP OF THE LIST RATHER THAN TAKING YOU TO THE LOCATION WHERE YOU LEFT OFF; A NIT, BUT SOMEWHAT ANNOYING. YOU THEN HAVE TO SCROLL DOWN TO WHERE YOU LEFT OFF IN THE LIST OF TOPICS.
What's great about it: GOOD QUESTIONS AND VERY CLEAR EXPLANATIONS
What's not so great: SEE BELOW

Too much guessing with a pension
on March 20, 2015

A very good program to do taxes but there are a couple of sections that could use some improvement. First if you are on a pension that is not coming from an IRA, it is very confusing and clumsy to get the information into Turbo Tax. It seems Turbo tax assumes all retirement income only comes from IRA distributions. This needs to be improved so you don't have to re-enter the data to make it come out correctly.
Second issue that needs improvement is in the area of heath care. It is not clear which option to pick when you have to pick where or how you are getting health insurance.
What's great about it: guided questions do help you ensure you cover every subject, but some tax knowledge is required.
What's not so great: Does not handle pensions well and health care questions are confusing.

Buying the Right Program!
on March 20, 2015

If it is the first time with TurboTax you may have difficulty following the program. EX: Income, do you want to do it yourself, or do you want to import the items. Deductions, almost the same thing. If you go through the program doing the work, I found I did not need to do all of the items. I don't need a preview when I am ready to PRINT the final product. Why was that done? Am I missing something. the KISS method is well known, and I subscribe to this procedure.
What's great about it: It is easier to navigate through the program yoursef.
What's not so great: If it says PRINT you should be able to print the document.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Very User Unfriendly
on March 20, 2015

The software insisted there were invalid dates in the short term gains/losses section of form 8949. (1) I reported no short term gains or losses. (2) There was no way to clear the blank spaces where the supposed invalid dates were. Totally unsatisfactory and the problem caused me to have to file my federal and state returns manually.
What's great about it: Data entry fairly easy
What's not so great: Correcting errors in capital gains section seems to be impossible.

A great deal of thought and experience is contained in the TT program. That makes the ornery chore of the tax mysteries a real breeze.
What's great about it: Very clear and helpful
What's not so great: You didn't organize my records for me. :)

Better each year
on March 20, 2015

I have been using turbo tax for more than ten years. I have had new tax requirements as I have increased investment opportunities. All of my needs have been met. I have never had an audit. Knock on wood, will probably have one this year.
What's great about it: Handles my K1 schedules with ease.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
