Some Glitches
on March 20, 2015

The stock sale section needs some work to clarify short vs. long term capital gains entries. I didn't discover that I had entered information in the "short term" section instead of "long term" until I tried to file electronically. At that point Turbo Tax had already checked for errors and had cleared me to file. But after I went through all the steps to file, including printing a copy of my federal and state returns, suddenly Turbo Tax would not file them and started telling me about invalid dates on one of the forms. However, Turbo Tax did not provide a map so I could to go to the place where the invalid data was. Finally had to re-enter all of the data and that fixed the problem. Two issues: (1) lack of visibility of the difference when entering short- and long-term gain information, and (2) Turbo Tax said everything was okay to transmit but then all of a sudden everything was not "okay."
What's great about it: Generally good walk-through for entering data
What's not so great: Module for entering proceeds from stock sales and capital gains needs some work
Pros: I bought or sold investments

My 2014 Turbo Tax (Premier) Experience
on March 20, 2015

I have used Turbo Tax for ~20 years now, and it seems to be the best personal tax program out there, but I've had enough problems with it too. This year the product line up changed, so I wasn't sure I could file Schedule C for a (very) small business with Premier. Worse though, the data for Schedule C Part IV Vehicle Information displayed and calculated correctly, but does not display when printed either to pdf or a live printer. This is apparently a bug, but it's not acknowledged. A rep assured me that the info on the screen would be reported correctly to the IRS, so I forged ahead. I will need to submit a hard copy to the state with pen and ink changes.
Also the worksheets for contributions remain confusing to me.
What's great about it: Worksheets, forms linkages, printing to pdf
What's not so great: Bug in Shedule C printing, uncertainty about feature lineup, confusing contribution worksheets
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Overall good application to prepare taxes. Requiring to re-enter some information like is this your son/daughter when I all wanted to do was edit social is cumbersome.
What's great about it: It is a logical progression through the various parts of the return.
What's not so great: Re-entering some data is cumbersome. Does not impact return.

I DON'T MIND PAYING FOR FILING. I DON'T REMEMBER EVER HAVING TO PAY FOR THE STATE RETURN AFTER PURCHASING THE TURBO TAX PROGRAM
What's great about it: EASY TO USE
What's not so great: HAD TO PAY FOR STATE RETURN
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

ambiguity

Foreign taxes were difficult to enter. Nondeductible IRA was challenging. I had to guess at "state & local ID#" and after a fashion, got it right. Additions and subtractions for state taxes were difficult. But overall, I found T T helpful; a worthwhile program
What's great about it: T T's thoroughness; calculating details
What's not so great: ambiguity on several forms; arduous placing amounts

Everything seemed ok until it started printing copies. It would not quit printing. I had to shut it down by turning the printer off.
What's great about it: Seemed to ask the right questions.
What's not so great: Printing function was poor--had to shut it down to quit printing.

Made short work of my taxes

I received a little money from an inheritance and TT made it easy, once I figured out I had to upgrade my Deluxe edition to the Premier edition. Much to my surprise, there was no charge. Only the Premier edition had the special forms I needed.
Now that I'm retired, I actually look forward to next year's taxes, since I'll be so poor, I doubt I'll have to pay taxes! ;-)
What's great about it: Free Upgrade to Premier appreciated
What's not so great: Cons are mostly tax law-related, not software!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

great product easy to use

I really like using Turbo tax to prepare my tax return. Overall it is a great product. It makes the process easy and I like to be able to import documents instead of having to manually enter them. I also like to keep info from year to year which make the process very easy. This year I was disappointed with all the mess with what version of the software was allowing what in the return. I am glad they give the free update to turbotax premier in order to fix that problem. Finally for my state return it was extremely easy but I would have liked a little more info in some of the categories like adding back retirement contribution to gross income to calculate taxes. I had to do some research to see what qualified and what did not qualified in that category. I would have like also to have the tax help book easily available to see if there was more info in it.
What's great about it: very easy to use
What's not so great: light on info for state returns at some points
Pros: I had a baby
