Easy to Use

I have use Turbo Tax for several years. I like the detail and the easy to use. I have recommended the program to several people.
What's great about it: Program is very easy to use and covers every item in detail.
What's not so great: Trouble downloading state forms this year.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

paid a penalty

Really like the product and am quick to recommend it to others…despite the 'fiasco' over the Deluxe edition this year. Appreciate Intuit having done us 'right' with that.
Why does one have to pay a penalty on taxes due because of a one-time event (distribution from a Trust) that occurs late in the year?…seems unfair to say the least!
What's great about it: like the questions asked to help one work through some areas
What's not so great: then again on some topics just not enough 'help': e.g.. 'passive interest carryover'….???

It was a slow process
on March 20, 2015

This was my first year using Turbo Tax, and it was a slow process. I've used a tax professional for several years. I had no idea how much information I needed to enter when filing on my own. I am glad Turbo Tax was able to guide me step by step. I would have been lost.
The only issue I had was filling out the investment property and excess 401K deferral sections. Some of the questions were confusing and I had to do some research (outside of Turbo tax help center) on how to fill out these sections before continuing.
For example: I had passive losses and depreciation carried over from last year and I couldn't figure out how to do it. I had to do some research on the web and looked at my 2013 tax return thoroughly before inputting any information on the Turbo Tax.
I did not think Turbo Tax did a good job at showing me how to enter the excess 401k deferral. Again, I had to do some research before continuing.
Other than that, everything went smoothly. I am glad I used Turbo Tax to file my return.
What's great about it: It was easy use
What's not so great: Some of the questions were confusing

Overall, a great tool. Been using for years. Only problem this year was trying to enter data manually (ie 1099DIV,INT,R. Only wanted to import. Kept recycling back to previous page.
What's great about it: Easy to use filling in prior years data
What's not so great: couldn't enter some data
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Why Change Format?
on March 20, 2015
Posted by: ALBW
I began using TurboTax the first year it was available to the public. I found it easy to follow the instructions and decipher the explanations and examples.
However, this year seemed to be filled with an extremely high percentage of changes, including design, language, structure, etc. I am sure that this new direction is to keep pace with the changes occurring in technology. Be careful that you do not lose your customers that love your software.
What's great about it: Ease of use; directions clear
What's not so great: Wording much too difficult this year

An Old Friend!
on March 20, 2015

I have used TurboTax for many years and it has really taken the work and worry out of the tax preparation process for me. I like the feel of hands on preparation (vs. having someone else do it for me) but I do like the organized and professional approach TurboTax provides. Also, it's very comforting to, in a manner of speaking, have someone "look over your shoulder" as you wend your way through all the complexities of this annual process. I'm 84 and have always done my own tax preparation, but it is very nice to have TurboTax help me!!
What's great about it: It takes you through all the complexities simply and easily.
What's not so great: During review: hard time understanding where "ABP Adjustment" came from. But I'll take it!

Turbo Tax Enhancement
on March 20, 2015

Since this (2014) is the first year returns had to deal with the affordable healthcare act, more detailed information on the treatment of insurance premiums would be very helpful, i.e., out-of-pocket versus total premium. I was blindsided by the fact that healthcare tax credits are based on unadjusted gross income not AGI and as a result I have to reimburse the government for the monthly credits received even though our AGI does not requie income tax payment.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Need more description on complex items
