Good generally, weak on how to use program
on March 17, 2015

I've used TT for at least two decades, and have been generally satisfied. When I search for information on a topic, I get advice about tax law & policies, when what is really needed is how to use the software. There's glitch in donation of goods to Goodwill, etc.; TT (updated) advises to enter "various" as date for multiple donations, but in the final review, it says that's no longer permitted.
What's great about it: Prior year info rolls forward
What's not so great: "Interview" technique makes it very difficult to stop/restart. I can't do the entire return in one session.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Great program, although I think one must have some understanding of taxes to start with. Luckily I do.
What's great about it: ease of entering info
What's not so great: it didnt always answer my question

very happy w tt

I couldn't do my taxes on my own without tt. My only complaint is that the update had an error and I had to go manually download tax forms. Also, after 10mins it didn't load my previous years files...maybe I should've waited longer.
What's great about it: i don't have to do all those backsheet calcs
What's not so great: it couldn't find my last years filing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

NonResident Filing made easy
on March 17, 2015

I've used TurboTax for 10 years. It seems to have gotten more complicated and more costly each year, with this year being even greater when I had to purchase the Home and Business version to get the same forms as I filed last year. There was an email from TurboTax that part of this cost would be reimbursed upon filing fed return, but I haven't any idea how this is suppose to take place.
What's great about it: State forms uploaded and auto filled after fed form completed
What's not so great: Efile cost doubles if agree to have it deducted from Fed refund

The questions and guidance improves each year and the Help has the needed answers when you become unsure.
What's great about it: The step-by-step is easy to use
What's not so great: Had to upgrade for royalty issues

Import from financial information
on March 17, 2015
Posted by: GinT23
I received a 1099-R from my financial institution and input the numbers in the program. Eventually (FINALLY) received a complete electronic file with all the necessary details. Imported that newest info, then reviewed. Discovered that the 1099-R had been entered a second time without a query regarding duplication. Had to manually delete the second entry. THANKFULLY I detected the duplication. The program should have, at a minimum, asked if that was correct.
What's great about it: saves some time and confusion
What's not so great: does not recognize possible duplication of info

2014 taxes
on March 17, 2015

Overall Turbo Tax is very good. I probably should have used a professional this year. I found it difficult to maneuver through the 1099-R form process. Turbo tax was not crystal clear as usual on this form. I also left unclear on the process for paying estimated taxes in 2015.
What's great about it: importation of documents is wonderful
What's not so great: tough year with retirement and large capital gains. difficult to decipher 1099-R process
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
