Good work
on March 17, 2015

We know that Massachusetts has a quirky reputation for late delivery of software that is e-file and paper compatible. TurboTax announced it would be late in both forms. Perhaps e-mail could be used to let users know about the progress. It was only by checking updates that we knew the MA software was ready,
What's great about it: Almost foolproof
What's not so great: State (MA) software availability not well publicized

TurboTax 2014
on March 17, 2015

We have used TurboTax for many years. Never had any problems until you changed the Deluxe Version this year and all of the negative reviews. We were then forced to purchase the Premier Version at a much higher price. We were given directions to get money back AFTER we file the taxes to make up for this. I send my taxes by mail, not efiling, so I hope this works and I get a refund. Taxpayers have enough hassle, I hope you get this right for next year.
What's great about it: Quick and easy for the most part
What's not so great: The mess up by Turbo Tax in changing the Deluxe Version this year

Good Federal - Bad State
on March 17, 2015

My rating of 4 applied only to my federal return. I would give my state return a 2. Turbo Tax was easy to use, and it covered everything I needed for my federal return. When I started my state return, I noticed that Turbo Tax had credited my required minimum distribution as retirement income when it was not. I ultimately deleted my state return from Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Easy to use - Covers Everything
What's not so great: Bad state return

Great Improvement Right Up To The End
on March 17, 2015

The look and feel is improved for 2014. Let's hope it stays that way for 2015.
Access to Forms and navigation tools are excellent. But when it comes to printing, you are lead to believe you can select only certain import forms, but too often you can't uncheck Worksheets, and something called "Smart Worksheets" don't even show up until you hit Print. A 20 page return becomes an 82 page print job, costing you time, ink, paper and patience.
Lastly, if you've been getting by with the Deluxe version, but you sell a mutual fund or stock next year, it may cost you more for the Premier package. Why? Well, there's an extra form, extra worksheets for each transaction, and plenty of Smart Worksheets overseeing everything. You'd better be an active trader or small business person before the upgrade becomes worth it. If you're retired, or a bum, it probably won't be.
I've used TurboTax since Year One, save for one year when they no longer ran on DOS. I'm flippin' coins as to whether I'll be back at nearly double the price. It's a real Love Hate thing, as if paying taxes weren't enough!
What's great about it: Better menus and Step-by-Step. Excellent access to Forms.
What's not so great: Printing just what you need is nearly impossible. TurboTax keeps pushing Worksheets, which may or may not be unchecked.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

Best Year ever using TurboTax
on March 17, 2015
Posted by: InNomine
This was the least problematic year ever using TurboTax, which I have used for many years. The Professional Edition included some formerly difficult parts such as K-1 forms & help for MLPs (which thankfully I have since sold). Investments, interest, losses & expenses went very smoothly.
What's great about it: Generally excellent, you did well addressing K-1 MLPs
What's not so great: Some confusion over IP Pins, only needed in rarer circumstances than indicated.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

First time taxes on my own
on March 17, 2015
Posted by: CW212213
I liked how everything was done step by step in an easy-to-follow manner. However, some questions/statements were a little confusing and I had to ask friends for help. I suggest breaking down the language so that even first-time tax filers can do it all on their own.
What's great about it: Easy to complete
What's not so great: Wording is confusing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax - buggy product
on March 17, 2015
Posted by: dmk1492
Every year I hit several annoying bugs in TurboTax. And my taxes aren't really complicated.
Several bugs experienced this year:
1. Failed to import data from Charles Schwab
2. While entering ESPP transaction manually I selected wrong company name. I entered all the numbers clicked save, and attempted to edit wrong data. That was not allowed.
So I was forced to delete whole transaction and start from scratch. Wasted 10 minutes of my time. Very user friendly !
What's great about it: simple 1040 it does ok
What's not so great: bugs in handling of many other "complex" scenario
