State Filing was a complete pain and not FREE
on March 15, 2015

The state section only copied over the federal information but did not do a detailed walk through as it has done in previous years. There was no section to deduct education fund contributions and I had to manually enter last year's state refund as "other". Additionally, state filing has always been free. This year there was a charge. Not a good way to treat loyal customers. I will be looking at other options in the future.
What's not so great: State Filing

TurboTax: Can't Miss in Complex Situations
on March 15, 2015

TurboTax gets better every year. TT's Interview does a great job of teasing out required information without becoming overwhelming. Should the user wish to learn exactly what TT's nosy questions are driving at, TT's Forms view shows how the numeric details work. If that weren't enough, TT makes supporting data sheets available for most data entries, quite helpful for records retention.
However, IMHO TT has become too expensive for use every year. New tax payers can use TT once to learn how their life-long Sisyphean struggle with tax authorities is going to play out. In subsequent years of stability in their situations and the tax laws, they can refer to the TT example but fill out current forms by hand or use less expensive competitive products.
What's great about it: Interview outlines the process, forms allow detailed adjustments
What's not so great: Has become too expensive for use in simple situations
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Mixed feelings this year.

With the exception of completing the K-1 information regarding the disposition of a Limited partnership the software works very well. Completing the forms for the KMP sale was very confusing and contacting TT was virtually impossible. There were lots of suggestions from the community but they aren't tax specialists.
When you advertise one free state tax forms for those of us that have been using your products for years (since 1997) the assumption is that you also get one state filing. Clarify it or start providing a free submission with the product.
What's great about it: The process of answering questions and supplying information appropriately works very well.
What's not so great: Misleading state filing information. Stating one free state forms implied submission also. K-1 completion needs work.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

K-1 problems for estates and trust
on March 15, 2015

It is not clear how to enter estate and trust k-1 info regarding expenses on a liquidated trust (schedule e supplemental) and the 2 % AGI limitation. Apparently this goes on Schedule A as misc. You only go to business expenses and non of this falls under that. Also, hard to understand why the loss on the above K-1 shows up as a gain on the California return; but it is correct on the Federal return, as a loss. Not enough tax to worry about, but am curious.

Most good-Some not so good

Have been a big fan of Turbo Tax until this year. Not so easy to use when you have more complicated situations.
Form 8949 - did not indicate that various could be used as dates for stock sales. Did not ask enough questions regarding basis. Had to go to IRS website to look at instructions and Pub 550 to complete.
Form 5695 - did not make entering information for residential energy credit easy. Not at all clear that information for a heat pump that qualified for credit had to be entered under nonbusiness energy property credit section rather than residential energy efficient property credit section. Could have explained that much better. Again, had to go to IRS website to look at instructions and form in order to figure it out.
What's great about it: Easy for simple returns
What's not so great: Not enough information provided for filling out forms
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

TTax review - 2014 tax year. March 2015
on March 15, 2015
Posted by: PSSanDiego
I have been using TurboTax for ~25 years, back to the old DOS version days. For many years I have purchased the Deluxe version - as it had all the features I need, and included the state program. This year (2015 for 2014 tax year), TurboTax intentionally deleted features from products and made an upgrade purchase required to get them. They literally had a customer-for-life, and they blew it! I am a customer they will lose. In the future I will consider other tax programs to try.
What's great about it: Easy to use tool that meets my needs
What's not so great: Too much added trying to sell upgrades and services
