2014 Turbo Tax: Income Tax Made Easier
on March 14, 2015
Posted by: JMoorehead
I have been using Turbo Tax every year since 2000. It just keeps getting better. What used to take me an agonizing week to accomplish can now be done in one day and most of that is collecting the necessary papers and receipts.
What's great about it: Walk through of everything
What's not so great: Don't really have much to say in the con department

TurboTax 2014

Prefer to see the selections that I have made during my editing/reviewing process and not the default choices you provided.
Outer ring of the radian selections appear haphazardly highlighted in many instances.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Should not charge for filling another state return.

Stressful for the first time

Federal source income is so challenging. It does not import so I had to enter it myself. All downloaded information should transfer. It didn't always save my data. I know next year will be better now that I know what I am doing but I did think it was going to be much easier than it was.
What's great about it: Easy entry
What's not so great: entering investment data was a headache

Frustrated with 8965
on March 14, 2015

Form 8965 is not allowing me to have a short gap in health insurance without a penalty. I had two months of no insurance and Turbo Tax wanted to calculate a penalty. I had to manipulate info to get it not to calculate penalty.
What's great about it: Easy step through
What's not so great: Form 8965 is wrong

TurboTax takes the work and anxiety out of doing the taxes. I use the Investments version due to some stock and retirement fund issues but it makes it simple.
What's great about it: TurboTax is my hero...ten years in a row!
What's not so great: None
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Great deduction finder

This version of Turbo Tax seemed more thorough than others. Covered more issues that I didn't think would apply to me but they did, and discovered more deductions. The one thing I would like to see is more complete instructions that cover most common situations without having to read through the actual IRS documents.
What's great about it: Easy to use; seems to be thorough
What's not so great: Some instructions can be more specific
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

disappointed

I had to manually go over each list to ensure that all the questions had been asked. They had not, so I had to complete section by section. Because some sections have multiple topics, if you answer NO to one question in the preliminary area, it just skips that whole section later. The review told me I was done, but I knew there were section topics I had not been asked about.
What's not so great: Guide mode skipped many sections
Pros: I bought or sold investments
