2014 tax return
on March 13, 2015

We moved from MD to SC in November of 2014. Software made it extremely difficult to file MD and SC returns. I was on the phone with a Turbotax associate for 2 hrs and I'm still not sure if I did it correctly. MD wasn't too bad but SC was very confusing. Why doesn't the software ask me questions to determine residency? If it determines I am a resident filing part year then it should somehow ask for the appropriate income numbers which would already be subtracted from MD. I will probably not use Turbotax if I move again...this was a real pain and I'll probably get audited!!!!!
What's great about it: Very accurate and made federal filing a breeze.
What's not so great: Need to improve software concerning states...
Pros: I moved

Turbo Tax significantly eases burden of preparing and filing taxes. So nice to do away with paper forms and instruction booklets!
What's great about it: ease of use
What's not so great: had to upgrade operating system

I wanted to change my amount of 2014 tax refund applied to 2015 estimated taxes. It could not be done without totally looping back through the step by step instructions for the whole return. A royal pain. It wouldn't allow me through the check review because I had manually done an overide on that line of the 1040 form. When I went to e-file, a pop up stated that the program prevented the webpage from being displayed, but didn't tell me why. Finally figured out that it was hanging up, because I didn't fill out the TN state return which I did not meet any requirements for filling, since TN does not have a state income tax. Finally figured out how to get around that. Went to pay my NC state filing fee by credit card and the secure webpage never would display to allow payment. Had to go the lengthy route and more paper work and charges associated with deducting cost from my tax refund. Might try another tax preparation product next year. Worse experience I have ever had using Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Transfers previous year's tax info into current year's
What's not so great: Difficult to go back and make certain changes easily. Program does not proceed, no explanation.

My biggest problem is that it is hard to review things that are imported. If you make a mistake in Quicken in defining an account, you can't see the information that is imported in error without jumping through hoops. I used to be able to see what I imported, and could catch my mistakes easier before.
What's great about it: is still easy to use
What's not so great: hard to find information

Certainly better than doing it by hand

Overall pretty darn good. Amending a return which has been submitted electronically, but not yet paid is totally confusing. The software can't differentiate between an electronically submitted federal form and a mailed in state form. Prints way more forms that you really need to submit an amended return and you have to sort them out yourself. And, the voucher amounts are wrong. Instead of a voucher for the difference, it prints out a voucher for the entire amount. Make sure you don't send in too much. This part of the software needs real work.
What's great about it: Carrying forward info to the next year
What's not so great: Amended returns are very confusing

I have been using TurboTax since 1995. I really appreciate the ability to import data from prior years and from my brokerage and bank accounts. I do tax returns for friends as well as for myself.
What's great about it: Free eFile; year-to-year comparisons
What's not so great: Getting more expensive for computing fewer forms
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Maybe for a Single State Return Normally

I had taxes taken out in MD when I lived the entire year in NC. In order to recover the taxes paid to MD, I had to file a MD Non-Resident return and it was difficult getting the software to adapt to this special case even after I paid for the state software.
What's great about it: Generally easy to use
What's not so great: Was more difficult that i expected to file multiple state taxes

Have been filing my taxes through TT for at least a dozen years. The tax code doesn't get easier, but TT consistently seems to make computing and filing federal and state taxes easier each time.
What's great about it: fast, pulls data from past years and from brokers
What's not so great: complicated - Hey, its the Federal tax code!
Pros: I bought or sold investments
