Review of 2014 TurboTax Premier

Pennsylvania State Tax preparation should highly recommend you complete section on tax forgiveness if entered income levels dictate that you would be eligible for tax forgiveness. Instead TurboTax just asks you if you want to try it. If I wouldn't have just tried it to see what would happen, I would have lost $331. i would have never guessed that retirement income isn't considered in the calculations for PA tax forgiveness. I am sure a lot of retirees in PA never even tries for this based on the TurboTax program not directing you to go there.
What's great about it: Basically an easy step by step process to complete.
What's not so great: Not all entry fields have help.

I had a wrong date in one of the investment entries and I finally found how to get to that date to correct it.
What's great about it: Marvelous calculations and transfer of entries
What's not so great: When in Review and errors are indicated it is a little difficult to correct the errors.

Love Turbotax
What's great about it: Easier every year, despite my taxes getting more complicated
What's not so great: Price
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

One last chance

Despite the nefarious decision to omit key schedules from the Deluxe package while charging the same price, I am using the Turbo Tax software one more time. I have used it for many years and have recommended it to others because I enjoy such features as transferring the prior year's info into the current year's return, importing financial data and having all the calculations for gain and loss made and Schedule D completed correctly. I am pleased with the program overall, but if the 50% price increase remains in effect for next year's edition, I will probably seek out another tax package.
What's great about it: Loved importing all secutities transactions. Sch D now a snap!
What's not so great: System prohibits use of "VARIOUS" dates for charitable non cash

I was very pleased with Premier, it is a superb program. However, I had to buy Premier for the first time because Deluxe was not up to Turbo Tax standards.
What's great about it: Premier works the way Deluxe should have worked - straight forward
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

State of Tennessee state tax issues.
on March 12, 2015

Federal is very thorough and accurate. Your State of Tennessee is sketchy because it defaults to taxable for 1099-INT, if you do not use EDIT option to manually set taxable or non-taxable. Most 1099-INT interest is non-taxable in Tennessee. Quicken should be able to determine type of institution bank, credit union, etc. sending 1099-INT and set non-taxable without default to taxable or manually editing. On 2013 return, I used Quicken for state of Tennessee and erroneously paid them when I really owed them nothing.
What's great about it: Thorough and accurate on federal
What's not so great: Quicken defaults to taxable for 1099-INT interest. In most cases, should default to non-taxable for state of TN.

Fed is great PA state is awful

PA State looks at unreimbursed business expenses differently than Federal. TurboTax tries to MAKE THEM FLOW THROUGH. Even going to the forms, it isn't possible to reconfigure the data that flows from the Federal return into the PA forms
What's great about it: Everything seemed to work well even though my wife and I have the equivalent of 13 part time jobs
What's not so great: PA State is an after thought
Pros: I bought or sold investments
