Paper State File Not Good
on March 11, 2015

You are pushing efile. I efile Fed but paper file State. You do not give very good instructions as to how to do that. I just print off all the state forms and then pull apart the ones I need to send in. There are no clear instructions if I want to do this. I have to "figger" it out myself. Not good!!!
What's not so great: Unclear instructions

Makeing tax filing easier

When I entered my pension data (1099R) and had to go through the RMD questions , I was in doubt as to the complete entry procedure. I was in doubt as to answering the questions correctly. I had the same trouble last year. I think in handling 1099Rs a question should be asked as to if the data is associated with a pension. If yes, then revise the following questions to more logically handle something that is not an IRA entry.
What's great about it: Like the immediate update of refund status as I'm entering data.
What's not so great: The way pension plan is handled as a RMD.

YOU SHOULD ASK AT THE BEGINNING WHETHER YOUR TOTAL INCOME WAS OF THE RETIREMENT TYPE! WITH THIS ONE WILL NOT GET HUNG UP ON THE W-2 AREA BY MISTAKE! THANKS.
What's great about it: fairly easy to navigate
What's not so great: see below

Great tool

Great Product. I gave up on doing taxes years ago because I could not keep up with the 50,000 page tax code. It was getting very expensive to have my CPA do the filing and since I no longer had complicated things to do I decided to try Turbo Tax. It was great! One little glitch on the 1099B that does not tell you where to find the information to pick box A/B/C/D but there was an answer in the Help area that cleared it right up!
FYI:
My nickname is Joe it is not "at least 4 characters long". There is not a lot I can do about that. :)
Further FYI:
You don't want a "nickname" you want a unique reviewer name. :)
What's great about it: It did not cost me $400.00 to file
What's not so great: 1099-B instructions unclear

Easy to do; still verified by doing it myself!

Everything worked out the same-Turbo Tax vs handwritten. Turbo Tax wins by being much simpler!
What's great about it: Can stop anytime; save and come right back to it!
What's not so great: I'm old school-would like to see copy as I'm filling it in!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Still areas of confusion
on March 11, 2015

Still encountered some areas of confusion:
1. When importing data from Quicken, programs asks if you want to add 2013 state taxes paid with return in 2014 to 2013 estimated state taxes paid in 2014, or replace this amount. Why is this a question? This is very confusing. Have to look at the forms to make sure the info is correct.
2. When entering state tax payments made, and interview requests amounts paid by quarter, not clear if it requesting amounts paid IN quarter or FOR quarter. For example, amounts paid in Jan. 2015 are FOR 4th quarter of 2014. Had to check the forms to make sure that FOR is the intent of the interview question.
3. Program did not carry over information on 1098 form from last year. Had to look up and reenter all information about home mortgage. Maybe that's because I imported mortgage interest paid from Quicken, and that overrode data imported from prior year? Turbo-tax should nevertheless retain info about mortgage dates and points.
What's great about it: Integrates with Quicken
What's not so great: Have to review forms to make sure they contain what is expected
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo tax is easy however the small print slows me down. If I had the ability to zoom in 1 or 2 times would really help. I am in my 80's with eyes that are getting dim. All in all you do a great job with the tax code monster we have to deal with. Thank you very much for your continued help.
What's great about it: No cons except for what I said in the review.
