Easy way to do taxes
on March 9, 2015

Overall, Turbo Tax is an easy to use program for preparing tax returns. It keeps your data from the year before so they don't have to be re-entered, and compares last year's return with this years. This provides an outline of what you need to include and a comparison of the amounts in each category.
What's great about it: System leads you through the process of filing
What's not so great: Have to buy a state tax program when it's not needed

Review of Turbo Tax Package for 2014
on March 9, 2015

I'm sure there have to be a lot of people like me who are experiencing 401K drawdowns upon reaching 70 1/2. I got confused on whether I had a draw down or a roll over. There ought to be some verbeage that says if you are doing what I described here are the steps. Also on donations. I must have done something wrong. In the past, non-cash donations have been easier to enter. You would enter the charity receiving the donation and then list all of the non cash items. I did something wrong and had to enter each item separately.
What's great about it: Well put together as usual. Can rely on Turbo Tax to be complete and offer many suggestions through questions. Thanks
What's not so great: Need more help on retiree drawdowns and donations.

I have used Turbo Tax for probably 10 years or more and this was the worst year. CD wouldn't start automatically, had to mess around and get it going manually. Had to upgrade to do one little investment - good thing the upgrade was free or I would have quit then and there. If you don't return investments to the Deluxe version as in previous years, I will be moving on to H&R Block next year. Was not impressed with TT at all this year!!
What's not so great: CD wouldn't auto start. Had to upgrade for investments

Looking for a better Turbo Tax in 2015
on March 9, 2015

Turbo Tax had a horrible 2014 and I'm waiting on an apology and want to know how you will fix it. I received emails from the company stating they overcharged. Then I filed the same return as usual and had to pay a $30 upcharge to complete the return.
Head scratcher!! Then there was the security breach.
What's great about it: 20 year vet - was always pleased.
What's not so great: Turbo Tax had an awful 2014.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Investment tracking more difficult than past
on March 9, 2015
Posted by: sanslos
Investment tracking (cost basis, etc.) no longer simply transferring from broker tax forms, now the actual data is spread over several documents and the language used seems inconsistent. There is automatic calculation having to do with investments that is not clearly related to the data entered, making it much less clear if the final results are accurate when reviewing.
Sometimes data entered manually then reflected in automatically generated worksheets does not seem to be correct. On at least on occasion the dollar amount was correct but the description got lost somewhere, and I figure out how to fix it manually.
What's great about it: Able to find forms, entries as needed
What's not so great: Automatic entry seems unstable, investment entry not clear

It would have been nice to know the program doesn't support VISTA before I started. Had to call for phone help and find out the news after the Program refused to connect to the web for an e-file.
If there is no change in the pricing structure and the features on the "basic" version, I will not purchase TURBOTAX next year as I have done for over 20 years.
What's great about it: Ease of use, helpful explanations
What's not so great: Because of format and price changes, I had to use a more expensive program than ever before.

Va tax easy guide could be better
on March 9, 2015

Virginia tax return info could be better. I never could figure out why the finished form didn't show my father in law as deceased.
What's great about it: Overall turbo tax is great
What's not so great: Had to work to get VA estimated taxes

disappointed

Very disappointed for the following reasons:
Forced me to purchase premier because I need to import Financial information from broker. Previously included in deluxe and now only in premier.
Had to register to obtain a password..I did not register. Do not need encryption.
State return included and paid for but not needed (Texas). No option to buy without state return.
Next year I may switch to a different vendor.
What's great about it: worked well
What's not so great: revised bundling Premier v Deluxe (see review)
