Expensives for royalty payments
on March 5, 2015

After using TurboTax for years for my Fed.taxes with out problems I was caught short using TurboTax Deluxe 2014 for a small oil & gas royalty payment in 2014. Had to get an upgrade to Premier version of TurboTax to complete a minor part of my tax filling which had been successful in past years even using the basic version of TurboTax.
What's great about it: TurboTax Premier provided access to Form E
What's not so great: Need more information on deductions for royalty payments

Quick & Accurate

For those with returns that do not vary much from one year to the next year (that I suspect is a large majority) the feature of comparing the return to last year's is of great value in ensuring completeness and accuracy.
What's great about it: Provides an organized framework for filing and correct math.
What's not so great: Did not need password entry and e-mailed code checks.

I don't care for the hidden fees that are attached to this program.
What's great about it: Easy to go through!
What's not so great: Was not aware I was going to be charged a fee for State returns.

Not User-friendly

Many fields required a double click which then opened a drop-down menu. Only discovered this by accident. The forms tab should list ALL forms whether empty or not. Don't try to save me from myself. The K-1s were confusing; the instructions I got from the issuer did not always follow your instructions. Finally, I filed electronically and got a PIN. But when I went back a few days later to check the status, it said there was no record of my having filed. So I did it all again with a new PIN; I hope I haven't filed twice. I would like to see more flexibility in the program; don't try to second guess users.
What's great about it: Remembered my previous year's return info. Made the health care section easy.
What's not so great: Every time I opened Turbo Tax I had to download the updates -- even after I finished my returns. Couldn't skip.

2014 Tax Year
on March 5, 2015

I felt very comfortable with the process. My income includes Social Security, rental property and investments. I couldn't have done this personally without TurboTax. I would have had help.
What's great about it: Very easy
What's not so great: Time consuming but taxes are that way.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

VERY useful. Used to do the old paper preparation for 35 years. THIS is worth it - the headaches from the paper years was grueling
What's great about it: Worked through it again this year - 8th plus year of using TurboTax
What's not so great: Just the funkiness of the US Tax code

Taxes can be fun!

I actually enjoy doing taxes with Turbo Tax. I did my taxes in about 4 hours. The biggest time saver was downloading all my Capital Gains / Losses information directly to Turbo Tax from my Brokerage Account ! Wow, that saved a lot of time and I felt like it was done correctly (when I do it manually, I'm never quite sure if I did it right or not !). On the down side, I was very confused as to which product to purchase this year after getting several apology letters from Turbo Tax. I ended up buying the Premier Software this year even though I have used the Deluxe Software for several years. I'm still not sure I purchased the correct product, but it got the job done, it just may have been overkill. I hope next year they package the same software in the same name as before! Just the confusion nearly caused me to change brands, but since I've used Turbo Tax before and liked it, I decided to stay with them again this year. It's a good product, just a confusing year for them.
What's great about it: Downloaded data from my Financial Institute
What's not so great: Confusion with what software to purchase this year
Pros: I bought or sold investments
