TurboTax vs LPL financial
on March 4, 2015
Posted by: Steve3624
Great product I have used TurboTax premium for many years and it was always been a non stressful event, but this years tax( 2014 ) was different a problem between TurboTax and LPL financial which didn't let you import the financial info into TurboTax until March then it only imported the 1099-R info the rest I had to hand enter, not to bad, but a little stressful. Hopefully next year 2015 it will be resolved.
What's great about it: I have used TurboTax for years and no problems, till 2014
What's not so great: Had to wail a long time to get the import function for LPL to work

was disappointed that I had to pay more for the premier edition instead of the deluxe edition which I have used for many previous years to do the same thing
What's great about it: software worked great
What's not so great: had to get the premier edition vs deluxe edition

Extra estimated tax payment #5
on March 4, 2015

Had to go back to add a payment to est. tax payments to prevent owing tax. Pathway was difficult to find. and the new entry did not appear on the state estimated tax payments worksheet. but was corrected on CT. State tax payments for the year.
What's not so great: Difficult to update/ locate additional tax payment for state.

Why pay some tax preparer to enter the figures when you already have all your information gathered and in your shoebox or file folder. It's easy to enter your own because TurboTax asks you questions. All you do is find the form and enter your own data! Simple as that, you have your refund!
What's great about it: I like that it knows all the rules and that I don't have to!
What's not so great: A snag in the credits for fuel cell energy credit. It asked me again and again and it already had 0 in it.

The 2014 version seemed to work well and the comparisons to last years return were a plus.
What's great about it: Easy data import. Detailed review of each option available.
What's not so great: Several screens prior to getting to return menu.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

19th year with TurboTax
on March 4, 2015

Used TT once again to complete my taxes. Simple to use and accurate as usual.
No major issues but some minor annoyances.
While in the interview, use of the on-screen back button does not always take you back to the page you were last on. Should be a simple issue to resolve in future issues.
More annoying is the inability to be reviewing the forms and not be able to switch to the interview and end up in the area you were looking at while in forms. Instead, you end up back at the place where you exited the interview. If I go to forms and switch to a different form (move from 1040 to Schedule A for example), going back to the interview should take me to a page relative to schedule A. I believe previous versions over the past 19 years have had this capability, I would like to see it again. My navigations in forms are intentional and returning me to where TT thinks I want to be is not appropriate.
What's great about it: Importing of personal and prior year data
What's not so great: Losing functionality as the years pass

Had to Update to Premier
on March 4, 2015

For years I could use Deluxe or Basic and if you knew what you were doing you did not have to update to costly Premier.
What's great about it: Does a good job with 1040 Sch-D BUT
What's not so great: Did not like to have to update to Premier, Extra cost
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have used Turbo Tax for many years and will keep doing so. Easy to upload data from previous year.
What's great about it: Always makes taxes easier. Step by step when I need it.
Pros: I moved
