Too many bugs
on March 2, 2015
Posted by: 2014taxedpayer
Bugs:
1. Can't exit TT if you don't save the file. For example, opening the file to check if you entered the correct value for something.
2. Program locks up when try to print or save a PDF after eFiling federal taxes.
3. NJ State tax: had to manually separate an entry into two lines on the Pension, IRA & Annuity worksheet for spouse's IRA account that had both an RMD and Roth conversion. However, it was handled correctly on the federal return
4. NJ State tax: Pension, IRA & Annuity worksheet Part B didn't enter unrecovered contribution for 2013 & entered in amount on both lines 4a and 4b (instead of just 4b, per the form's instructions). Note that I turned 70 1/2 in 2014 and had activities on this form in years prior to 2014. That may be the source of TTs' confusion but the state's instructions are very clear.
What's great about it: Handled Fed 1040 easily with multiple 1099Rs, ROTH conversion, etc
What's not so great: Too many bugs; had to override state (NJ) for RMD and Roth conversion from same account

A troubled year
on March 2, 2015

While there were problems with different parts of the program the Tech support was great. I'm sure that this years problems could turn some users off...that is not the case with me. I have been using Turbo Tax for many years and this is the first problem I have encountered....I will be back next year.
What's great about it: Once it was operating as designed it was great
What's not so great: Had some problems with the program.

TurboTax Premier

This is the first time that I have used TurboTax, most of the area's were fairly simple except for the "Investment" area. When dealing with dividends, capital gains and capital losses it gets a bit confusing of how things offset one another. So maybe some explanation for beginners might help. Otherwise I like it.
What's great about it: Easy to navagate
What's not so great: Ivestments need more explanation of "capital gains/losses/dividends etc.

Made a complex task simple!

Very satisfied with TurboTax! This year we had multiple sources of income that proved more challenging than in previous years. The software worked flawlessly, and made sure we paid what we really owed, and still got a small refund. I recommend TurboTax to everyone I know.
What's great about it: Ease of use, depth of number of forms, and clear explanations
What's not so great: Just the whole tax thing is more complicated than it should be!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

TurboTax 2014
on March 2, 2015

First, I have been using TurboTax for the Mac since before it was TurboTax. It originally was called MacInTax. The thought and planning that go into this product is incredible! This year, while it cost me more, TurboTax discovered an error made by my IRA holder who could have caused me a tax penalty. TurboTax caught it! While doing one's taxes is never fun, especially if you know you do not have a refund coming, TurboTax covers all bases and will help make the task easier and more efficient. HIghly recommended.
What's great about it: As always, software written with care and, as expected, good results.
What's not so great: Intuit threw a curve ball this year and changed levels of "coverage" with the various packages. Some had to spend more.
