Tubo Tax Missed Some Useability Factors this year
on February 27, 2015

VERY disappointed in Turbo Tax this year:
- took 10 minutes every time started it up to download updates. WANT the option for preparation purposes, and WILL do updates before filing.
- Line 42, Personal Exemptions. IRS form is confusing; turbotax could make it clearer about PEP limits
- NO phone number for consultation discernible, even after signing up for TT/Intuit support. Very Frustrating.
What's great about it: Still has relatively easy to do filing process and calculations are pretty painless
What's not so great: 1. REQUIRES an update Every Time you start it up. (WANT the option as before). 2. Did not explain personal exemption
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Cumbersome

Needs to download and open easier. Overtime I opened it went to read only. Took a long time to where I could update. It is not simple.
What's great about it: Calculated quickly
What's not so great: Had to wait for updates and is a cumbersome program. Confusing at times.

no refund if you plan ahead
on February 27, 2015

It works well in easy step, but is not easy to edit. Some data entry is incorrect and will cost taxpayer if they don't override on the form (e.g. interest on US gov obligations on Vt return does not transfer to the return unless you manually enter it). So, I find it good to enter most information, but you have to check it after it checks itself or you'll end up with an inaccurate return. I also wish there wasn't so much hype about "big refunds" as if they are a great thing. Face it, they are an interest-free loan to the government which good planning can largely avoid. So it should be "too bad you have a refund, better planning could have avoided it"
What's great about it: does the math and helps on topics
What's not so great: very difficult to work within forms that need to be worked on
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Sign on to broker, hit "download," and every form and amount is entered, which saves a lot of agony.
What's great about it: Ease of entries
What's not so great: Can't see the .pdf of actual tax documents until all is finished.

Fast and practical
on February 27, 2015

The easy guide provides understandable questions with multiple choice answers. Further, if you are not sure of the right answer, there are help buttons to explain the answer in more detail. TurboTax then puts your answers in the appropriate blocks on specific IRS forms. This takes the frustration out of completing your taxes.
Lastly, since i just retired, TurboTax allowed me to complete a pro-forma estimate of my taxes for next year so I can withhold the necessary amount.
What's great about it: accurate and asks only the questions pertaining to my previous answers.
What's not so great: Was not very clear on IRA direct transfers from trustee-to-trustee and if a 1099 R was needed. (It is not).
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
