Poor quality wasted a lot of my time
on October 15, 2015

Every year I waste time because of the poor quality of turbo tax for handling investment transactions. I will switch to other software finally.
What's not so great: had to enter wash sale codes manually for imported .txf file . No fix for sw even though it was a known issue at Intuit
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Resource Hog
on October 15, 2015

As I posted on the user forum, the performance is dreadful from a technical standpoint. I don't know what kind of churning is going on inside the app, but at one point, while trying to download my state and after several minutes of non-response, I checked it in TaskManager, and it showed MemUse=243112K, 1,226,621 handles, threads 33, and was still climbing.
Even now, just idling while I do this review, it shows MemUse=285,968k, 4,632 handles, threads 38.
It boggles the mind; I've never seen that type of performance in anything else; it gives bloatware a new meaning. Once upon a time, developers were expected to efficiently manage system resources by closing out connections and releasing memory when exiting functions and procedures. Good programmers still do that; I think these numbers speak for themselves in that regard.
What's great about it: Simplifies tax prep
What's not so great: Resource hog

Not so happy

I find the program does not give as much help as in the past, and I had to upgrade in order for the program to handle K-1 type information. Over the last few years I have found the "search for help" screens to be almost useless.
What's great about it: The program was fast and stable
What's not so great: The program required I upgrade to Premier when it was not needed in prior years.

I have been a customer for almost 10 years and was shocked when I was about to submit my returns to pay over $100.00 which I never have. I called and spoke to a rep who guided me through the process to get 1/2 off the fees!! Thank you so much!!!
What's great about it: Very helpful in giving me a discount
Pros: I had a baby

When I went on your site and had to upgrade to premium I used my capitol one credit card and didn't get the discount. A little bummed about that.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Had to purchase premium this year when I didn't have to last year

Confusing changes this year lower the rating

I have used this product for 10 years without trouble or regret, and normally would give it a 5 star rating. This year (as always) I purchased the DELUXE edition, but half way through my return, when I indicated I had sold stocks (as I do every year) the program indicated I need the PREMIER edition (DELUXE was not enough). It indicated that this would be free, and instructed me to sign in. When I did I kept getting an error saying it did not recognize me (even though the same sign-on and password worked at the Intuit-Turbo Tax site on line). I was on hold with customer service for over 30 minutes (the representative could not understand the problem). Then I saw another pop-up indicating a different help number. When I used that, the representative seemed to understand, and after another 20 minutes on hold, I was given a confirmation number to put into the program which finally worked.
Take away messages:
1. expect some trouble using the program, and look for the pop-up.
2. most people will need to pay more NEXT YEAR for the PREMIER edition. I wish they had just charged more for the DELUXE edition, and continued with the same functionality.
What's great about it: Same easy to use format, especially if used previously
What's not so great: Required upgrade (if stock sale) which was poorly executed

turbo tax is gone
on February 2, 2015
Posted by: harlygirl
Turbo tax has gone the way of the old used car dealer. After the sale there is a continual array of add on's. Just like the old dealers with delivery fees, undercoating fees. with turbo tax every form you need there is an additional fee. Even the filing of the state has an additional fee that it says is free. After 11 years of using turbo tax, I will be looking for a new company.
What's great about it: got taxes done
What's not so great: You can't just buy and get it done
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Fee structure
on February 4, 2015

I do not like the new fee structure with all the different levels. I do not intend to use Turbo Tax next year.
What's great about it: Import feature
What's not so great: This new format for fees is terrible
Pros: I bought or sold investments
