Getting Better Every Year
on February 22, 2015

TurboTax seems to be getting easier to work with every year. In the past one could not go back, change an entry and have the new data reflected on the forms without redoing each successive step. It was like changing a datapoint on a spread sheet without the final numbers changing. There were times when a problem could be seen on a form but there was no readily apparent way to make the change in the program to get the entry corrected. It seems like the person or people writing the code are now using the program to see how the final product works and should work. Nice improvement over earlier versions or years.
What's great about it: The ability to go back and forth between entires and have corrected entries accepted and carried forward.
What's not so great: There are still a few items that must be searched out and completed like mileage for jobs.

Done Quickly and Accurately

I did my own taxes for many years. It seems I was always needing one more form to complete them. Since starting using TurboTax several years ago, I have never had to wait til I got the form or needed to go get the instruction sheet for a form. I like how I can quickly and easily put the information in once and not have to "also enter this amount on line 34 of schedule H and if more than $22.50 enter on amount on line 99 of form 6284"!
What's great about it: It knows all my numbers and other facts from last year!
What's not so great: Had a small problem with a zero balance carry forward into the state return.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Much better than last year

Now that the screen update problem has been fixed, i no longer an on the verge of switching to TaxAct. That problem (huge black areas when partially covered up by other windows and forced to frequently minimize and maximize to refresh) was so frustrating that I had almost switched to another program.
My only remaining complaint is the filing process. As long as the state e-file costs me money, I will NEVER e-file the state. Why pay to e-file just to get back $15? TT wants to pressure you to e-file both or neither. IT SHOULD HAVE AN OPTION TO E-FILE THE FEDERAL AND PAPER-FILE THE STATE. It's a pain to use it the way it is to achieve that goal.
What's great about it: Finally fixed the screen update problem ( Windows OnPaint() ? )
What's not so great: Pontiac city step-by-step skips days not worked in city entry - had to hunt for it in forms view.

Surprised by 2014 Turbotax

I have been a TT user for probably 10 years plus. I have appreciated how TT is always upgrading options such as filing electronically both Federal and State returns. In 2014 I was surprised by two items: First, I am concerned I must now upgrade to Premier to file the same returns I have been filing for years only because Intuit chose to move some tax forms to Premier. That is a $30 increase in cost I didn't anticipate. The other surprise was the feature that allows me to check the rental costs of surrounding property. I am not sure if that is a positive or negative at this point.
What's great about it: easy to use and always appreciate the checks and balances
What's not so great: Never new I had to upgrade to Premier.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I was able to quickly prepare and file my return since I have used TurboTax in previous years and much of my 2014 tax information was loaded from previous years returns. It took me longer to collect my tax records than it took to fill out the returns in TurboTax
What's great about it: Good product
