Unnecessary Changes Just Made it More Difficult
on February 19, 2015
Posted by: Tim196
An example: I'm only filling out this review because once I entered it, I could not back out to where I was before to proceed without a review. I had to complete a review just to finish up the program.
Just encountered a problem with the nickname I selected. Really!! Jeez, what else can go wrong!?
What's great about it: None this year
What's not so great: The changes made navigating the program more difficult

Always use Turbo...Always Pleased

I can only complement. I thought the shorted version of Deluxe, which I have used forever was going to pose a problem. You folks heard and understood the complaints and came through. Keep up the good work. Don't fix something that isn't broke!
What's great about it: Walking my way through EVERYTHING
What's not so great: You short-changed us on Deluxe, But made amends.

Disapointed in changes to tax packages
on February 19, 2015

Requiring a tax package upgrade to file personal capital gains on stock, etc. transactions was disappointing.
What's great about it: Still easy to follow and file
What's not so great: Requiring an upgrade

Fast, simple and accurate. Guided tour of everything you need in tax preparation and filing. Impressed by the import capabilities, particularly of W2s.

Fast and easy. Downloading tax info such as W2 and investment information is great.
What's great about it: Easy - love the fact that tax info can be downloaded.
What's not so great: I can not think of any
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

put the 2014 premier features back in the deluxe
on February 19, 2015

I have used turbotax for many years now. The interview feature is good for beginners, but being able to go to specific tax areas is a plus. Since various forms from different entities come at various times, I find it easier to enter the forms as they come in so i don't have a marathon session if I wait until I have all the forms. If the features moved from the deluxe version to The more expensive premier this year are not moved back, I will look at other competitors tax software next year.
What's great about it: easy to use
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Not much improvement year to year
on February 19, 2015

Turbo tax does the job, but it's not as good as it could be. There's not much improvement year over year.
A few examples, when it comes to rental property, work expense, car expense and and miscellaneous deductions, it seems like there could be a better flow thru those sections.
I spend a lot of time entering deductible items subject to 2% AGI limit but in the end each year either barely qualify or don't qualify for the deduction. It would be nice to get a better feel as to how close you are getting to the 2% limit as you enter expenses throughout the interview. As well as which deductions are subject to the 2% limit.
The car expense/mileage deductions section could also be a bit more user friendly. It seems like the details of commuting miles, beginning mileage, etc. could all be carried over from the last years return and the whole section made a little clearer.
With the rental property section I never got a good feel for how my rental capital loss carryover or disallowed capital loss was calculated or how that was applicable for future years. How did my deprecation work into the calculation. Was it really included? What part of my expenses were disallowed because of my income level. Are there any strategies I could implement to better my deductions?
I'm starting to think I could get a better return if I brought my taxes an actual person.
What's not so great: Not as sophisticated as it could be
Pros: I bought or sold investments
