Expat issues with filing
on October 15, 2015
Posted by: wapthompson
A nice software package but very cumbersome to use for expats. I live and work overseas for a foreign company. All my earnings (capital gains and wages) are overseas, however, the software is challenging when it comes to these issues. It would be great if the first questions asked in the questionnaire reviewed whether or not the individuals fulfilled the rules for expat status and then based the rest of the questionnaire on that status. Thank you.
What's great about it: Very convenient and great for using previous year's information
What's not so great: Cumbersome to use for expats
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I have been using TurboTax for about 20 years (Business, Premier and Deluxe). This is by far the Easiest and Best Tax Preparation system on the market, PERIOD.
What's great about it: Ease of use and completeness of content
What's not so great: State electronic filing not included
Pros: I bought or sold investments

State Angel Investment Credit Forms
on October 15, 2015
Posted by: Johno2014
The lack of the Angel Investment Credit forms (at least for Wisconsin and Minnesota) in TurboTax makes the filing process much more complex.
For Wisconsin, I have to download a separate Form VC from the Department of Revenue and fill it out manually.
For both states, we cannot file electronically. This requires a huge number of copies (including copies of the federal return) and excessive postage. Also, Intuit is missing out on the state electronic filing fees.
What's great about it: Generally very good
What's not so great: TurboTax does not include forms for claiming Angel Investment Credits with its state tax returns.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

form explanation
on October 15, 2015

Once you get past income the language round deductions, other than mortgage and property tax, is still hard to understand. E.g. payment for one time services vs consulting versus business operations, need for 1099, clarity about the questions would improve with more use of pronouns
What's great about it: Lots of explanations
What's not so great: Language complicated

Getting Your Taxes Done
on October 15, 2015
Posted by: MWHessel
I have used Turbo tax for over 15 years. I find it easy to use and helpful with answering questions. It will also assist you in keeping records that make the process quicker each year. I also use Quicken and Quickbooks as well as the Intuit product for filing a Partnership return. I prefer Turbo Tax over a tax preparation service because I feel I understand more completely what is being reported and why.
What's great about it: Help menus are very informative and help with answering many questions
What's not so great: The fees associated with e-filing the state returns are a little high.

Import 2013 Tax Info
on October 15, 2015
Posted by: borkdawg
When doing my 2014 TurboTax return over the past few days, I discovered that my 2013 TurboTax data file apparently did not save when I did my 2013 tax return in October 2013. Because of this, I was unable to import my 2013 TurboTax data into my 2014 return. As a result, I was forced to re-create the 2013 tax file using a paper copy of my 2013 tax return.
I don't know how this happened, as it seems like every time I entered information into TurboTax, it always, saved my file when I exited the program. Needless to say, I am now very careful about saving the tax data file.
What's great about it: TurboTax Customer Support was super helpful
What's not so great: My 2013 Turbotax data file apparently did not save when I did my 2013 tax return in October 2014
