Mike's Review of Turbo Tax 2014 Home & Business
on October 3, 2015

I have used Turbo-Tax for as long as I can remember with excellent results. The process is as detailed and comprehensive as working with a consultant. I do not like using customer comments and answers as professional opinions and recommendations. Turbo-Tax needs to go back to being the "expert" in the process. The finishing and filing process is circular and confusing. I was led back to the .pdf save and print item several times. Attempting to order the 2015 edition was problematic. I'm still not sure I was able to order the edition. I have reset my password twice and updated my personal info twice and arrived at "Start 2015 for free". I recommend Turbo-Tax as a great aid in working up Federal and State tax returns.
What's great about it: The question and answer format, comparison to the earlier year is good, review process is good.
What's not so great: Update is confusing. It implies there is more to be done vice update opportunities are available. Use complete if done.

This is my last year of fighting turbo tax. Every year, it gives me errors at the end from one K-1. The errors are impossible to resolve. The dollar amount on the K-1 is trivial, but the frustrations with Turbotax's inability to resolve these trivial amounts without an error message is extraordinarlily frustrating
What's great about it: For basic tax situations, works well
What's not so great: If you have complicated K-1 Investment Partnerships, forget it
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments, I moved

Charge for filing fee but can't e-file, REFUND
on October 4, 2015

Spent many weekends filing the same return. there are errors but not enough help to understand how to enter the information on the detail worksheet. the self help is not helper. It requires a CPA to understand the form.
The child tax credit was transferred from federal to state, but it doesn't apply in my case, the form cannot be deleted and will give errors.
i paid to file state tax electronically but now it's unable to do e-file, i don't know how to get refund for the state tax filing fee!
What's not so great: not very intuitive software, self-help is useless, charge for filing fee but find out can't e-file

ok, better than others

I have used several other software programs because they were much cheaper but came back to turbo because it is far faster and simpler in my opinion. I don't like the way it handles K-1s though, it seems that there is never enough information in the k-1s for the program so the error message never ends. I had to look for where to indicate that I wanted my refund to go to 2015 taxes where in the past it was a question at the end.
What's great about it: covered everything on a complicated return
What's not so great: Changes in process from year to year, had to search for items that previously were asked about.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Very helpful-each year, I learn more. I believe that I'm only using 15% of the power of Turbo tax.
What's great about it: all the forms are available to review that I need to review; easy interface

I've used TT for years and, overall, I have found it easy to use.
What's great about it: Walk through item by item
What's not so great: Not exactly intuitive
