Tabular Data
on July 26, 2015
Posted by: TeddyMon
TurboTax (TT) has two problems: >Excessive screen clutter created by Smart Worksheets which cannot be turned off. >No way to see tabular data in simple tables for: -1099B Items / gains and losses / Form 8949 -Sch-K1 line items
User is forced to drill down into Form 8949, using a clumsy scroll control, to see/edit each transaction from the broker. Why not present this in a simple table or grid as an option? I think Pro Series does this.
User is forced to scroll through lots of screen space to find, enter, and access entry lines in Schedule K1s. Seeing a K-1 as a table (similar to how the TXF does a top down list) would make review and confirmation 10 times easier.
The entire tax return's topside numbers should be visible as a table that a user can filter on category or amounts.
Your UI designers seem to think presenting "picture images" of IRS Forms is all the user wants. In fact IRS forms are terrible designs for entry of data - an artifact of the 1950s.
In UI design, we strive to present compact logical relationships in data that a user can see - this might be called a "Logical Model" of the data - which can sit aside the IRS Forms data model. If one can say the IRS has a concept of a "Data Model".
One more thing: you might consider a tree hierarchy for the forms - they are all listed at one level. But in fact certain forms are children of other forms. For example you can't have Form 8949 without Schedule D.
What's great about it: None
What's not so great: Visibility of Tabular Data - 1099Transactions etc

State Refund

Prior years the State return was electronically sent free. I was surprised to find this added charge at the end of the process.
What's great about it: Ease of putting together my return
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Superb!!
on July 28, 2015

I love being able to double-click a box and have that open up a list box where I can enter various items line-by-line, such as job-hunting expenses or travel expenses.
I have been using tax software since beta-testing days in the 1980s. DOS-based on a 386, mail in the disk. Things have come a very, very long way and I appreciate the product. I also appreciate all the developers' work that goes into it, plus the integration with various financial firms.
Just a great product. Thanks again
What's great about it: Easy to use with the step-by-step guidance, yet allows access to more detailed work via the forms.
What's not so great: The little pop-up windows for tax code help have a small, hard-to-read font.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

building sale
on July 29, 2015
Posted by: JBC4
For two years in a row, I have had difficulty with the sale of nonresidentual buildings. Both years I originally did not check this H on the Schedule E Worksheet because I did not understand your Help directions. I had to pay for help. I would think you could make this easier to understand if you just added something like "for sale of property" after the word "disposition." Or at least simplify your Help directions. I happen to be an 86 year old widow with a PhD and I have found this one thing very frustrating.
What's not so great: "See Help" Schedule E, H Complete taxable disposition
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Disgusted with Do Not File/Form Not Final on Ohio
on July 29, 2015
Posted by: Paulyone
I read the same causes many times but no solid way to get rid of messages and simply print so I can file my return.
So I tried to file my state return electronically. Guess what? At the last click required to submit, I got a message that a form was missing and I should go to On-line tab and and update. I did that and no forms were updated. Tried to submit again with repeat of error.
What do I do now??? Maybe fill out my Ohio return by hand.
What's not so great: Hate Do Not File on State forms
