What's great about it: Easy walkthrough of all the details
What's not so great: Just need your records handy.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Forced to pay more for a much worse product
on May 28, 2015

1) I was forced to pay $$$ for Premier this year, even though Basic or Deluxe had been fine for many years. Then, adding insult to injury, I could not get the upgrade rebate because I needed a filing extension due to very late K-1.
2) Interview mode was even worse than in the past and figuring out how to find and fix discrepancies (esp. on state return) was frustrating and wasted a lot of my time. I never could figure out where TT got some of the state numbers! I wasn't going to pay more $$$ to file a questionable state return thru TT, so I filed online directly with the state.
Bottom line: After almost 30 years of using TT for my taxes, I am ready to switch to a different product. There is no excuse for Intuit's price gouging this year, esp. given that the product itself appeared to be worse than ever.
What's great about it: Data transfer from last year
What's not so great: Lots of problems on federal return; never got state return correct so did myself; ineligible for forced upgrade rebate

Research for next year's taxes
on May 28, 2015
Posted by: REgeland
I have finished my taxes for 2014, sent the forms into the I.R.S and even have received my refund. So I am finished, correct? No, I wanted to do some experimenting for the upcoming year. I made my temporary changes and updated my forms. All was well except for the summary form - it never changed. It remained the same as when I filed my taxes.
Basically, Turbo Tax is OK but there are a few "rough edges".
If I can find a better application for next year, I'll use it and cancel Turbo Tax. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Foreign Pension Plan Reporting
on May 29, 2015
Posted by: Baerbel
I have used Turbo Tax for many years happily, however, this year it would not let me e-file because form 1099 R - on which I need to report Foreign Pension Income - does not accept foreign address information nor would complete without Fed ID - which is not available. Help Community suggested various options but none of them work for e-filing, what a shame - and it did not make me aware of it until after I had paid for my State return e-filing. How do I get my money back???
What's great about it: Being walked through Step-by-Step
What's not so great: Not being able to e-mail due to 1099R not accepting foreign ID

The previous versions were much better.

Turbo Tax used to be a lot easier with less advertisements for additional services.
They are out pricing their product. I will look into other tax softwares next year. I bought the upgrade and did not get a credit for the original purchase.
It is definitely not as user friendly as it has been in the past. I recommended this to my brother and he could not navigate through the program without my help.
What's great about it: Covers new tax issues
What's not so great: Too many advertisements. Not as user friendly as use to be.

Good Value
on May 30, 2015
Posted by: PeggyVA
I've only used Turbo Tax, so it's hard to compare it to other packages. It appears that it's probably the best overall package for the money. It's a bit awkward, however, to search and find areas and topics.
What's great about it: Good product for good price
What's not so great: Doesn't support required e-filing of VA 502

Turbo tax stumbles over Schedule K-1
on May 30, 2015
Posted by: Lostboar
The software insists on getting details that are unavailable from the general partnership on the Schedule K-1. This details over a few dollars surely would not be interesting to IRS! I spent a lot of time entering the medical/dental/glasses expense only to take the standard deduction. I should have been warded that only total expenses beyond a threshold lead to higher deduction than the standard.
What's great about it: Ask gentle, easy to understand questions
What's not so great: stubborn as a mule and does not allow an out over a single dollar
Pros: I bought or sold investments
