Complex return made easy

Tracking of Roth IRAs within the program is a convenient feature. Trying to correct errors by deleting a form was not easy.
What's great about it: The step by step instructions provided easy filing.
What's not so great: Not easy to go back to correct.

Disappointing

The "step-by-step" interview process could be condensed onto fewer screens without making it any harder to use. In fact, it would easier to understand some of the questions if they provided more context. As with the actual IRS forms (but for different reasons), many of the questions are ambiguous, and being able to see how and where my answers are going to be used would make it easier to understand what is really being asked.
Also, the MA state health form in particular is really poor. It asks if I was covered for the whole year, and if my provider also "offered" coverage for my spouse -- but this is not asking whether my plan *included* my spouse! In other words, there's no checkbox to say "My spouse was covered by the exact same plan that I was, and with the same ID information". No -- you actually have to enter all of the information for you and your spouse twice. That's absurd.
What's great about it: Better than doing it on paper
What's not so great: Too verbose, too little information
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

OUTSTANDING in every respect but one!

For a US citizen living in Canada required to file US tax returns, Turbo Tax accommodates my needs fully even when things get complex and involved such as needing to file foreign tax credits, etc. I cannot recommend Turbo Tax more highly for their comprehensive and accommodating software. The other option is hiring a US tax accountant costing thousands!
However they won't let me pay with my Canadian Mastercard saying they take only US based credit cards, which I don't have or want. I strongly urge them to change their policies and find a way. After all I use my Canadian Mastercard all over the place in the US while traveling!
What's great about it: Easy, comprehensive, adaptive
What's not so great: Doesn't take Canadian credit cards for payment

In a task that on paper is extremely difficult and confusing, TurboTax is a great tool for simplifying and making understandable what needs to get done to file my taxes. I've tried accountants and have found that using TurboTax is less work and faster and less costly. I really like the ease of moving data from the previous year. Great tool!
What's great about it: Easy, Understandable, Fast
What's not so great: Needs a 5 year look back for trending
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

We have used Turbo Tax for years and are always pleased with the results. It is easy to use, offers step-by-step guidance, and helps you get the most return possible. If your tax situation is simple, you don't need an accountant or tax preparer to do your taxes, use Turbo Tax.. If your situation is more complex, than maybe you should seek a professional's help.
What's great about it: Thorough, Step-by-step guidance, Most return possible
What's not so great: None

my return printed where you have to hold it to a mirror to read as the original is all backward. I also can't find the stored copy on the cloud and or my computer. Lots of trouble this year and I have used your system for many years this is my first bad experience.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

OK. This beats the effort of actually filling out all of these forms. It says something that filing your taxes is so difficult that you have to pay someone to do it or use software.
1) Filing your state tax should be free for every state. If you pay for a product such as turbotax deluxe, part of the deluxe should be that you then also don't have to pay to file electronically for a state. Intuit could think of this as a national service.
2) This doesn't integrate with all of the companies that I have mutual funds with, so I have to manually enter these. case in point Oakmark funds.
3) Some of the error messages are not helpful. For example, when you install the software one message actually says "< one minute left." Error messages should use words, not symbols.
4) I can never figure out New York State taxes, especially for part year income. Anything that you can do to make that easier will greatly help.
5) This year the charitable deductions don't record when cash donations were made. So if you made multiple donations, you have to add all of these together first.
What's great about it: Still better than filling out some of these forms
What's not so great: Still could make taxes easier

Easy to use

I found it relatively easy to use the software and it walks you through it step by step. Fairly simple even when having to add additional data.
When it came to the state section would like to be able to pick an option to print to file manually easier. When I did print it out, the form was a mess and am hoping the state doesn't refuse it for the family's returns.
Would like to have a screen that would show if I or my children were to set up an IRA how much less would the taxes have been.
Seems as though some more effort can be put into to be more intuitive and import information from Quicken easier. Would like it to suggest what changes in withholding to make to avoid a tax bill the next tax year.
What's great about it: step by step process can be followed
What's not so great: going back towards end jumps back to start of filing vs 1 screen, state filing option should be easier
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
