Using turbotax is like signing up to be mislead
on April 15, 2015

I purchased what appeared to be the correct tax software, after I had started the process of doing my taxes I was asked for $30+taxes more for the Delux version that would allow me to fill out the forms for the sale of a house. And then when I got to state taxes, I discovered that the filing wasn't included just the forms. In the past TurboTax has been a brand that I trusted. I wont make that mistake again. It cost 49 for the software, 30 to upgrade and 25 to file for state. I will use different software next year.
What's great about it: Got the job done, good thing I had my credit card handy
What's not so great: Misleading product descriptions lead me to spend $55 over purchase price
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Good Software, new stock rules need work
on April 15, 2015

Everything except stock sales was as smooth as every previous year.
This year, I spent 10x the time filling out details on stock sales. I sold NQ options, ESPP and RSUs..none of them handled correctly by TurboTax. If I can find the correct boxes on the forms sent to me, TurboTax should be able to locate and import those as well. If not improved by 2015, I'm looking for another solution.
What's great about it: Very quick when used year to year
What's not so great: New stock sales reporting completely manual
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Decent, but missed a significant calculation
on April 15, 2015

All is great, with the exception of how my personal exemption was calculated. By using the IRS.gov form, my personal exemption deduction was $4,000 higher than what TurboTax calculated. Unfortunately, I could not figure out how to manually change the entry in my return...now Uncle Sam is walking with $4K of my money that he should not have.
Net/net, I might do taxes on both TurboTax and AtHome next year as I get both for free.
What's great about it: Interview is relatively quick and thorough
What's not so great: Missed a significant deduction

Making a compliated process easy

I've been using this product Turbotax or MacIntax for over twenty years. I appreciate the ability to be guided through sections or let me select sections/items I need to work on. We cannot count on the tax code getting any less complicated or frustrating, but I can count on Intuit to make a more powerful product, accurate and precise with regard to the tax code. I read about the security lapses with regard to lack of email authentication for account holders, but that has been addressed. Life changes are always upon us and one of the nice things is to check out the "what if's" or click the links that provide more background about topics I know little about. One can easily find out how a change or life event might impact taxes this year or next.
What's great about it: When I needed to upgrade there was no additional cost
What's not so great: I was a little nervous to hear about Intuit security lapses in prior years

Last minute surprise
on April 15, 2015

There seems to have been a glitch in the state tax return accuracy check. I had gone step by step through the entire completion process but was not alerted that anything was missing until I went to e-file. I hit the button to efile and suddenly the message pops up that one more piece of info had to be entered in a box 14a. It is quite unpleasant to have that type of request come at the last minute, after you think you are all done and ready to submit. (I had three 1099R forms that had one missing box each...even though I had copied everything just as it was printed). I had to go back and dig out the info needed...and there was no quick way to go back to the form. You should have a "take me there" prompt to get there quickly to look at the form. (The directions on that page were not the best)
What's great about it: I appreciated the access to a tax professional for a difficult question
What's not so great: Last minute surprise - just as I was all set to submit 3 incompete forms popped up.

i was told if I didn't claim one of my 2 kids do to a divorce agreement in FL.. (ea claim one) . an addl IRS form was needed to be sent after to the IRS.
however there was no mention or reminder or link when I was in that section.
I need to review that online to find form number.
You might want to include it... If I read it correctly :)
What's great about it: user friendly. the explainations as we go..
What's not so great: see below... in review

2014-2015

-Unnecessarily walks you through steps when information is available already to determine nonqualified status;
-Program should know which states do not have an income tax so that it does not require you to buy the state program
-Should be a way for the program to capture information from previous TurboTax filing. (Ex. Program should be able to get AMT information from previous year)
-Back space tab should take you one step back, not back to the beginning of the section
-Program should allow user to print the single page that you are working on if desired
-For some reason, required to complete Farm Income when I never indicated that I had a Farm. It was difficult to delete.
-eFiling process is a simple process
-Like the .pdf save file option
-Should better identify when a box should be left blank versus inserting a "0"
-Should consider a loyalty discount for repeat customer, as an incentive.
What's great about it: Loads personal information from previous year
What's not so great: State e-file fee is too high

I really like the navigation of the software, I found the online navigation to be messy.
But overall I like it...
Pros: I bought or sold investments
