Partial Year Home Rental
on February 8, 2015
Posted by: DontTaxOnMe
We had a rental property for part of 2014. We purchased the TurboTax Investments and Property to handle this. Some rental cost/income items are clear how to input, such as Total Revenue from rent. However, some items are not clear on how to input them.
TurboTax asks how many days of the year the property was rented, early in the rental property section. But it is not clear which items should be entered as a total for the year and which items should be entered as an amount applied to the rented time. (i.e. property taxes on the rental, mortgage interest paid, HOA fees on the rental.) Each input should specify if you are to enter the total amount for the year and TurboTax will apply it as necessary based on the number of days rented or if you input the values based on days rented.
This is clarified at the end of the section. However, it is not a time saving to enter things incorrectly and complete the process to find out that it was inputted incorrectly and the section needs to be restarted.
What's great about it: Forms are completed by Turbo Tax
What's not so great: It is not clear how to input all info

I really like the ease of transferring my forms and tax documents from the previous tax year. The comparisons from year to year keeps me from leaving out any pertinent information.
What's great about it: Walks me through each step of the way
What's not so great: I have to pay an additional amount to E-File my State Income Taxes
Pros: I moved

TT IS VERY GOOD, BUT...
on February 8, 2015
Posted by: RED471
I have been using TT for at least 20 years. I am very unhappy and disappointed with TT for removing features from the Deluxe version which caused me to have to upgrade to the Premier version of TT.
I read the CEO/President's reasoning that it was done, in part, to bring the online/free version and the purchased version in line with each other. Well, TT could have just as easily added to the online/free version rather than take away from the purchased version. Nobody is accepting that excuse. We all know that it's about the money.
This will cause me to seriously analyze the other available tax software for a possible move to one of them, as will many of your loyal customers do. I think TT has made a serious mistake with their change this year.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax (TT) is very good and I have been using it for 20 years at least.
What's not so great: That I had to upgrade to Premier this year because TT removed some features from their Deluxe version.

Because I have a little knowledge of tax law, I was able to select the deductions I wanted and speed through the filing process as easy and 1,2,3.
What's great about it: answered the questions and you were allowed to skip past what you did need to answer
What's not so great: none
Pros: I moved
