Great in some ways but could be better
on April 15, 2015

1) TurboTax is a great way to work at the computer instead of at a writing desk, at twice the speed, with no errors or smudges. The main time savings of T-T is in form-completion.
2) It would be very helpful to have more prominent click-ons next to key sections saying, "Must exceed 2% of AGI to even qualify here" or "Entering this here may increase your tax liability - click to find out why." There is more of this than there used to be embedded in your program, but I'd like more.
3) Your program needs to have an addition on screens that generate forms: sometimes one gets halfway into the screen and then discovers a more accurate or better way to enter the data on a different screen, or decides it isn't worth the work entering it at all, but that half-completed screen is in there forever, seemingly. There needs to be a button on the bottom of the Step-by-Step screen saying, "Clear screen and DO NOT SAVE THIS." Otherwise, the "fix-its" keep popping up, to fix what doesn't need to be fixed. (I did find a "delete this form" in View Forms, but not everyone knows it's there. The logic loops in attempting to answer the fix-it questions are involved and tortuous - this feature REALLY needs editing. Perhaps a vertical check-list would be good, and a reminder to type in and hit enter for every item.
4) Donating a vehicle to charity that was used partially for business mileage meets with all sorts of difficulties. That series of screens needs revision. The verbiage is especially foreign with "like kind" and phrases that are legalese. Best get a non-attorney to work on that.
5) Make it possible for those of us who are fairly familiar with the process to enter directly into the forms. The step-by-step is sometimes helpful, sometimes the long way 'round the barn.
6) If an internal computation is done by the program, causing the "answer" to be displayed of the forms, the user should be notified of that. Sometimes entries can go in two or three places, and some meet with more limitations than others.
7) More examples of possible deductions should be suggested - the portion of one's home computer that is used for chores associated with work, for example. So many of us must answer email on our own time, complete online work certifications on our own time, and so forth - there's got to be a guideline for that sort of stuff.
8) Examples of donating one's time to an organization should be outlined, as well as other volunteer activities: we are in an age of volunteerism and EVERYBODY is giving something to somebody. One's time should be able to be donated, too.
9) This is beyond the scope of your program, but a link to "maximizing deductions and saving your retirement income" for seniors would be useful. Many of us have money being hurled at us through Social Security, IRAs and retirement accounts and have astonishing incomes: IRS and FTB should be writing me thank-you letters, for all that ends up in their coffers. Suggestions on gifting, sequestering, establishment of business status, and other strategies to decrease one's tax burden would be welcome.
10) Several screens displaying the "take-homes" at the end of the process would be very helpful. One for total income this year (sources breakdown), AGI, and total withholding this year (sources breakdown) for both federal and state, would be informative. Also total profit generated by investments, and so forth, would be nice to see.
What's great about it: Easier to type than to write
What's not so great: Very little explanation of the rules behind the entries

Not that great!!!

See above. Also, I think Intuit could have done a better job on this premium-priced software! It's like no one went through this process and ironed out the probable questions. I'm disappointed.
What's great about it: fairly good graphics
What's not so great: too many problems and continuous questions about how to proceed. no good way to get back to where you were!!! needs a b
Pros: I bought or sold investments

2015 Software
on April 15, 2015

As this software has evolved, it has -- in my opinion -- gotten harder to use.
I was a Quicken 1.0 user -- it was basically an electronic check register which also printed checks.
My husband and I started with TurboTax its first year when it was an independent company based in San Diego -- before it was bought by Quicken.
My husband has been dead for over 20 years, and we used it throughout our 10-year marriage -- so I think I have a good perspective on the software.
In the last several years I find it difficult to maneuver around the software. When one searches for a topic, sometimes the software will have a "jump to this form" link -- often, it does not. Instead it has a bunch of FAQs -- which is nice, if that is what I wanted, but what I want is to go to A SPECIFIC PART OF THE RETURN -- OR -- WORKSHEET.
I had to go BACK to the IRA section where the software will calculate what you are entitled to deposit into an IRA or ROTH IRA, and I wanted to run it through different scenarios. Well, going to the form is one thing. Finding the worksheet is something else. It is almost impossible to do unless you can find the correct point of the return and run it through the "step-by-step" part of the software -- clicking and repeating until you get where you want to be.
I have NEVER understood why Intuit does NOT have a way to jump to the WORKSHEETS -- which only come up when one makes an entry -- if one has NOT made a previous entry.
The software does NOT DO THAT. Jump to an actual form, yes, but you can't get to the "try different scenarios" for certain things without a lot of wasted time and frustration.
In trying to simplify things, the software has only gotten more complicated to use.
Also, if I have to "revisit" an area to make it calculate forward to the part I want, there should be a place to click (SAME PLACE on screen for each page) where it says -- ANSWER IS THE SAME -- because there are places where one must check something in order to move forward and/or click a continue link.
After all these years of doing my taxes this way -- I find the software getting more frustrating to use.
What's great about it: It gets the job done.
What's not so great: Hard to manuever around.

Non-intuitive screens and workflow, horrible movement up and down and up and down within the screen.
Filing an extension was horrible, URL's didn't work.
Completely angered over the constant upsell.
What's not so great: Horrible user experience

Very cumbersome. Aware there were fraudulent returns filed for state of Georgia . Fixes put in place made it slow. Payment processing more difficult because we had to use purchase credit card rather than merely entering card to be charged. Password reset required & Took too much time to reset password. no tech support number to talk directly with anyone. Not good .
What's not so great: Very cumbersome this year. Ive filed many years using TURBO Tax.

Gets the job done

Turbotax does what I need it to do. I wish I didn't procrastinate so much! But the software is fairly straight forward and comprehensive. I feel tax prep services would have me doing all the leg work and they'd just be putting in the numbers that I come up with. Turbotax lets me do it myself.
What's great about it: Covers most topics thoroughly. Easy to imput information. Great to import info from returns or statements
What's not so great: When searching a question, some of them are repetitive but other situations are not there.

2 major problems. On one family return, fed was filed a month ago;when I went to file state, program choked on fed schedule that was never filed. Bad software design.
Second was inability to deal meaningfully with download from financial institution--they submit incidental 1099-B transactions (Fannie maes) without basis and with a few transactions in 2015. Can't override them; left to fix 50 or 60 tiny transactions by hand. Can't even relegate the selected transactions to a statement and click the statement box. Really time consuming and annoying. I would have shot the computer if I didn't have such capacity for restraint. You need to develop ways of helping users deal with downloads from firms you have collaberated with when they have stuff you can't figure out with the program. You leave the users in an all or nothing limbo.
What's great about it: better interface
What's not so great: locks/looping and inability to opt out of error screens
